Wrestling splits Senior Day doubleheader against Brown, Harvard

Bearcats defeat Brown 21-10 before falling to Harvard 30-13

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton wrestling (6-3, 3-1 EIWA) split its final two home duals of the season by defeating Brown (3-5, 0-1 Ivy) 21-20 while falling to Harvard (3-4, 0-1 Ivy) 30-13 Saturday at the Events Center.

No. 21 Carter Baer, who entered the night as the reigning EIWA Wrestler of the Week, won both of his matches on Saturday to improve to 15-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in duals. Carson Wagner, Dillon Arrick, Fin Nadeau, Will Ebert, Mikey Squires and Trent Sibble each won one match throughout the night.

"It's nice to go walk away with a win against Brown, but I thought we were a little flat tonight," said Binghamton Head Wrestling Coach Ryan LeBlanc. "I thought some guys obviously shined through. Hats off to Harvard. I thought they came in and built a lot of momentum. I thought we just got outfought in a couple of those toss-up matches, and we lost that bonus point battle.

"I think we got to work on our fight. I feel like when the match is within reach, I think we do a really good job. I think when it's in reach, we found ways to win. We found a way to win the overtime match. But when it's out of reach, we got to fight harder. We got to stay in there and fight for our team and wrestle a little bit harder. So, what we're going to focus on is working and hustling and getting back to the things that win those tough matches."

In between both duals, the Bearcats recognized the Class of 2026, honoring Baer, John Baker, Cayden Bevis, Ebert, Nadeau, Squires and Charlie Tibbitts for their contributions on and off the mat as part of Senior Day. Additionally, Binghamton celebrated former members of its program as part of Alumni Day.

"We got a great group of seniors," said LeBlanc. "They're great kids, they're all academically really strong and they stuck together. And so, I think anytime you have a group that sticks together that's that big, it's really good."

Highlights Against Brown
  • The Bearcats got out to a fast start against the Bears with both Wagner and Arrick securing a pin in the first two matches. Wagner registered his first pin of the season when he defeated Chase Yasutake, while Arrick picked up his third fall of the year by taking down Douglas Shipers. The two pins helped Binghamton jump out to a 6-0 lead in the dual.
  • After Brown responded with nine unanswered points, Nadeau went up against Ethan Mojena at 157 lbs. Trailing 4-2 with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation, Nadeau drove Mojena to the mat for a takedown to move ahead 5-4. However, Mojena secured a riding time point to tie the bout at 5 and send it to overtime. In sudden victory, Nadeau completed another takedown to keep Binghamton ahead 15-9.
  • With Bearcats up 15-13, Baer defeated Drew Clearie 9-3, just missing out on a last-second takedown that would have secured him his first major decision of the season. His victory, though, extended Binghamton's lead to 18-13.
  • Making his first appearance since Jan. 4, Ebert triumphantly returned to the mat by earning a 5-0 shutout victory against Connor O'Donnell to bring Binghamton's lead up to 21-13.
  • Leading 21-17 heading into the final bout at 285 lbs., Sibble took the mat against No. 29 Alex Semenenko needing to avoid losing via a technical fall or a pin to give the Bearcats the victory. Sibble held his own, only being defeated 6-1, allowing Binghamton to take the dual 21-10.

What Happened vs. Harvard
  • After Harvard went up 27-0 through the first six matches, Baer got the Bearcats on the board with an 18-2 technical fall against Ben Smith. The technical fall was Baer's first of the season.
  • Squires got his first win of the night by defeating Hudson Skove in a 12-2 major decision. The victory, which was Squires' third major decision of the season, moved his overall record to 12-2 and his dual record to 8-1.
  • Sibble closed out the evening with a 12-0 major decision against Jaeden Kinlock in the heavyweight bout, making it Sibble's first major decision of the season.
