Bearcat women record first-ever win over defending AE champions

VESTAL, N.Y. – Simply put, it was a weekend full of milestones and accomplishments for the Binghamton swimming & diving teams.

In a two-day meet against Bryant which concluded on Saturday at the Saunders Aquatic Center, the Bearcats swept their America East opponent by scores of 206-147 on the women's side and 182-171 in the men's competition. In the process, the Binghamton women's squad recorded their first-ever win over the defending conference champions. In addition, there were eight pool records and two NCAA Zone diving cuts turned in by the Bearcats during the weekend.

"We had a good week of training heading into the meet," head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. "We were focused on competing and seeing what we could do and everyone far surpassed what we expected from them. We got it rolling right away and never stopped. It was a special weekend."

Six of the pool records came in the women's competition - including three of the four relays. The 200 free relay team of senior Ava Olsian, sophomore Lauren Maierle, sophomore Elle Gerbes and freshman Christine Kim clocked a time of 1:34.87, which eclipsed Cornell's 2024 mark of 1:35.37. Maierle then joined senior Fayanne Smith-Salzberg, junior Eva Smith and sophomore Erica Czeremcha to record a time of 3:46.35 in the 400 medley relay. The previous record of 3:47.48 was set by the Bearcats back in 2009. Finally, Maierle, Kim, Czeremcha and junior Leonor Coelho broke the pool record in the 400 free relay. Their time of 3:28.33 bested the 2024 Binghamton mark of 3:30.30.

Czeremcha and Eva Smith also broke their own pool records during the individual events. In the 200 free, Czeremcha's time of 1:51.05 topped her previous mark of 1:52.55 at last month's Green-White Meet. Smith's 100 back time of 55.77 edged her Green-White Meet performance of 56.25. The final pool record by the Bearcat women against Bryant was set by junior Natalie Kassirer in the 400 IM. Her time of 4:28.60 broke the previous mark of 4:28.60, set by New Hampshire's Jessica Harper in 2016.

"The pool records in the relay events really set the tone for the whole meet," Czeremcha said. "It got everyone going and after yesterday, we wanted to keep getting better today."

On the men's side, junior Cameron Stetzer broke the pool record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:01.27. Current junior Amir Sadykov, who was second in that race, set the previous mark of 2:02.33 last year.

Sophomore Samuel Pikofsky-Christiansen won the one-meter diving event with a score of 311.18. It marked the second time this season that he has met the NCAA Zone Standard on that board (300.00). Also meeting an NCAA Zone cut was senior Dylan Norby in the three-meter competition. His first-place score of 333.00 was ahead of the 320.00 standard in that event.

Junior Evan Peters won a meet-best three individual events during the weekend, capturing the men's 100 free (45.23), 200 free (1:37.61) and 500 free (4:36.01). He broke his own pool record in the 200 free, surpassing his time of 1:37.94 from last season. Other individual winners on the men's side included junior Tyler Schultz in the 100 breast (54.90) and freshman John Eodice in the 1,000 free (9:31.57).

Kim led the women with two individual victories, taking top honors in both the 50 free (23.99) and 100 free (52.33). The rest of the first-place individual finishers on the women's side include sophomore Sophia Bondikov in the 200 IM (2:07.37) and fellow sophomore Julia Iwanow in the 200 breast (2:10.71).

Up next for Binghamton is a dual meet on Oct. 31 at Canisius starting at noon.
