Peters and Smith-Salzberg each win three events in first meet of the year

SYRACUSE, N.Y./VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior Fayanne Smith-Salzberg and junior Evan Peters each won three individual events while senior Dylan Norby and junior Jacob Koclanis both met the NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standards, highlighting Binghamton's sweep at the season-opening Hannah Gibbons Swimming & Diving Invitational on Saturday. The Bearcat women defeated Le Moyne 1135.5-590 and Stonehill 1135.5-382 while the men defeated the Dolphins 949.5-819.5.

"Overall I was happy with how we competed today," head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. "It was great to get the chance to race after a good training block. We saw some really good things and have a number of people ahead of where they were this time last year. We have some things to clean up and work on that we can look to correct and improve on in the few weeks."

Peters captured the men's 50 free (21.60), 100 free (46.77) and 200 free (1:42.19) while Smith-Salzberg took top honors in the women's 50 breast (30.61), 100 breast (1:06.76) and 100 IM (1:00.15). In addition, Smith-Salzberg swam on the first-place 200 medley relay team that included junior Eva Smith, senior Haley Nowak and freshman Christine Kim and clocked a time of 1:48.35.

Pikofsky-Christiansen won the men's one-meter diving competition with a score of 303.10 while Norby was first in the three-meter event with a score of 329.20. The current NCAA Zone Diving standards are 300.00 in the men's one-meter event and 320.00 in the three-meter competition. Both Pikofsky-Christiansen and Norby advanced to the NCAA Zone Diving Meet last year.

Smith and Kim were also double winners on the women's side. Smith swept the 50 back (27.03) and 100 back (57.75) while Kim was victorious in the 50 free (24.71) and 100 free (53.11). In addition, Kim anchored the first-place 400 free relay team that also included sophomore Lauren Maierle, senior Juliette Phillips and sophomore Erica Czeremcha and recorded a time of 3:28.82.

Other individual winners for the Bearcat women included Nowak in the 50 fly (27.01), Czeremcha in the 500 free (5:20.87), Phillips in the 200 free (1:58.85) and junior Emily Chung in the 100 fly (59.29).

Sophomore Isaih Francis was a double winner for the Bearcat men, placing first in both the 50 back (24.33) and the 100 back (52.91). He also swam on the first-place 200 medley relay team which included junior Tyler Schultz as well as freshmen Brayden Savas and Matthew Chang. The Bearcat quartet clocked a time of 1:33.72.

The other first-place finisher for the Binghamton men was junior Finnegan McFarland, who was victorious in the 500 free (4:44.45).

Binghamton returns to action against Bryant at home on Oct. 16-17.
