Men’s Lacrosse defeated by St. Bonaventure in nailbiter 10-9

Seven different Binghamton players score at least one goal in the loss

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (0-2) fell in a nailbiter to St. Bonaventure (1-1) 10-9 Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Seven different Binghamton players scored at least one goal in the game, with both Andrew Girolamo and Gavin Jacobsen posting two goals. Austin Constable, Troeger Lombardini and Ryan Meyers each recorded their first collegiate goal on Saturday. Connor Winters also made 13 saves in goal while collecting two ground balls for the Bearcats.

St. Bonaventure was led by Cole Kucinski, who scored five goals. Blake Maracle added two, including the go-ahead tally late in the fourth quarter. Isaac Farmer stopped 15 shots in goal for the Bonnies.

Kucinski opened the scoring for St. Bonaventure with a goal at the 13:21 mark in the first quarter. Girolamo responded less than two minutes later with an underhand shot to tie the game at 1 at 11:42. But St. Bonaventure would go on the man-advantage shortly after that, with Kucinski getting a man-up goal at 10:33. 36 seconds later, Will Feldmann, who assisted on the goal by Girolamo earlier in the quarter, found Lombardini in front of the net with a pass. The Binghamton native fired in his first career goal to tie the game at 2. The score remained tied until Jacobsen got a goal with 12 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, giving the Bearcats a 3-2 lead going into the second.

The lead would only last for 53 seconds in the next quarter, before Kucinski secured a hat trick to tie the game at 3. Blake Maracle and John Boomer each added a strike at 13:14 and 12:15 respectively to bring the Bonnies' lead up to 5-3. Girolamo would pick up his second goal of the day at the 4:46 mark, before Binghamton went into halftime trailing 5-4.

The Bearcats jumped out in the second half with goals by Jacobsen at 13:30 and Colin DeLay at 10:48 to grab a 6-5 lead in the third quarter. After Kucinski picked up his fourth goal of the day at 5:50 to tie the contest up at 6, Meyers closed out the frame by moving up from behind the net before firing in a low shot for his first collegiate goal at 3:03. That tally gave the Bearcats a 7-6 lead going into the fourth.

A few minutes into the new quarter, St. Bonaventure got another opportunity on the man advantage after Riley Jenkins was given a one-minute penalty for slashing at 12:02. After Eoin Mackay collected a ground ball off a save by Winters, the ball eventually made its way to Nolan Sharkey just across midfield. The long stick midfielder then got around a defender before sprinting towards the goal in open space. He then heaved a pass across the field to Constable, with the sophomore then firing in his first collegiate goal. The goal, which came with the Bearcats down a man, brought Binghamton's lead up to 8-6 with 11:18 remaining.

However, over the course of the next 10 minutes, St. Bonaventure put up four unanswered goals. Tallies from Onenioteko:wa Maracle at 7:59, Kucinski at 7:25, Blake Maracle at 3:01 and Patrick Shanahan at 1:47 helped the Bonnies retake the lead. Drew Filanowki was able to bring the Bearcats within one goal with seven seconds remaining, but St. Bonaventure won the ensuing faceoff to run out the clock and win the game.

Other Notes
