Four-day meet begins Wednesday at VMI

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton swimming & diving teams travel to the America East Championships this week. The four-day meet runs Wednesday-Saturday and is being hosted by Virginia Military Institute (VMI).

The men's team, which finished 7-0 in dual meets this season, won its second straight conference title last year. The Bearcats won a close meet against UMBC in 2025 and the competition is expected once again to be close between the two schools this week.

On the women's side, the Bearcats finished 5-3 in dual meets this season and are looking to move up from their fifth-place finish at the America East Championships in 2025.

Binghamton returns four defending conference champions this season. They include sophomore Evan Peters (men's 200 free), fellow sophomore Cameron Stetzer (men's 200 IM), junior Harrison Lambert (men's 400 IM) and senior Max Kaback (100 back).

Four other Binghamton swimmers earned all-conference honors last year with at least one top-three finish in an individual event. They include junior Fayanne Smith-Salzberg (women's 100 breast), sophomore Tyler Schultz (men's 100 breast), sophomore Jackson Kennard (men's 100 breast & 200 breast) and sophomore Amir Sadykov (men's 200 breast).

The top newcomer for Binghamton this season has been freshman Julia Iwanow. Swimming primarily in the women's breaststroke events, she has been named the America East Rookie of the Week a conference-best seven times this season. Sophomore Eva Smith - who transferred from Cleveland State - has made an immediate impact in the women's backstroke events.

Seniors Maria Pignatelli and Elizabeth Tirado both return for their final conference meet. Last year, Pignatelli was fourth in both the 100 breast and 100 free and also placed sixth in the 50 free. Tirado, meanwhile, was fourth in the one-meter diving event and fifth in the three-meter competition.

Another standout rookie on the women's side has been freshman Lauren Maierle. She could swim in as many as four relays at the America East Championships.

Binghamton's top three men's divers have already met the standard for the NCAA Zone Meet. They include freshman Samuel Pikofsky-Christiansen, sophomore Jacob Koclanis and junior Dylan Norby.

A pair of men's freshmen has also factored into the team's success during the regular season. Isaih Francis swept both the America East Swimmer and Rookie of the Week awards on Nov. 4. Evan Creter, meanwhile, was the Rookie of the Week on Feb. 3.
