Bearcat 2021 alum wins first-ever national title

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – For the first time in her career - collegiate or professional - Emily Mackay is a national champion.

The 2021 Binghamton University alum captured the women's 3,000 at the United States Track & Field (USATF) Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Breeze Track Facility. She posted a first-place and meet-record time of 8:30.01 and in the process, qualified for the World Indoor Championships - which are set for March 20-22 in Kuyavian-Pomerania, Poland.

Mackay's time was just .06 seconds ahead of runner-up Elle St. Pierre, who finished in 8:30.07. Margot Appleton took the bronze medal in 8:31.41. The top three finishers in each event punched their ticket to the World Indoor Championships.

"I felt confident and wanted to be patient because I knew I had a very strong kick," she said afterwards. "I wanted today to be a fast race and spread out, so I was pleasantly surprised with how the race played out. The build up for the race was really intense but I enjoyed it. It's what I live for."

Mackay has already made her mark both on the national and world stage since turning professional in 2022. She advanced to the 2024 Paris Olympics and made it to the semifinals of the women's 1,500. Last year, she qualified for the World Track & Field Championships in Tokyo and in 2024, she earned the bronze medal in the women's 1,500 at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

For all of her accomplishments, however, Saturday was the first time Mackay ever captured her nation's title in an individual event. For most of the race, she was neck-and-neck with St. Pierre - her former teammate when they both competed for New Balance Boston. In the end, it was her aforementioned kick that proved decisive.

Mackay is the most decorated female athlete during Binghamton's 25-year NCAA Division I history. She was a five-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) All-American and capped her career with a sixth-place finish in the women's 1,500 at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
