Emily Silver Medalist

Mackay earns silver medal in 3K at World Indoor Meet

Bearcat alum records best career finish on international stage

TORUN, Poland – Emily Mackay has added yet another chapter to her illustrious track & field career.

The 2021 Binghamton alum was the silver medalist in the women's 3,000 at the World Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday evening at the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena in Torun, Poland. It marks her highest career finish at a world championship meet, having previously earned the bronze medal in the women's 1,500 at the indoor meet two years ago.

Mackay's time on Saturday evening was 8:58.12 - just behind gold medalist Nadia Battocletti of Italy (8:57.64) and ahead of bronze medalist Jessica Hull of Australia (8:58.16). Hull had the lead going into the final 200 before Battocletti used a 28.54 final lap to overtake the field. Mackay, meanwhile, slipped by Hull in the final steps to capture the silver medal.

"It was an intense race and I didn't expect it to be so tactical," she said during her post-race interview. "I kept telling myself not to get caught up in getting an early position and to save my energy because it is a long race. I focused on staying very relaxed and patient until the last 400. I am just really proud of how I positioned myself during the race. I think I am getting a lot better tactically."

Watching the meet closely was Mackay's coach at Binghamton - Annette Acuff. Since 2017, she has watched Mackay develop into a five-time All-American in college as well as the successful professional runner that she has become.

"What a fantastic race and finish by Emily at the World Indoor Championships," Acuff said. "It's so exciting to watch her continue to improve and succeed at the professional and world levels.  We are all so very proud of her."

The silver medal capped the best indoor season of Mackay's career since turning professional four years ago. She won the USATF Indoor National title in the 3,000 back on Feb. 28 to punch her ticket to this week's World Championships.

Since 2022, Mackay has made her mark on both the national and world stages. In addition to her pair of medals at the world indoor meets, she advanced to the 2024 Paris Olympics and made it to the semifinals in the women's 1,500. Last year, Mackay qualified for the World Outdoor Championships in the 1,500 in Tokyo. The 2024 indoor championships took place in Glasgow. Scotland.

Mackay is the most decorated female athlete during Binghamton's 25-year NCAA Division I history. She was a five-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) All-American and capped her career with a sixth-place finish in the women's 1,500 at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
