Men’s Lacrosse taken down by UMBC 14-8

Will Feldmann scores two goals for Bearcats in loss to Retrievers

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (2-9, 1-3 America East) was taken down by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (4-6, 3-2 America East) in a 14-8 loss for the Bearcats Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Will Feldmann scored two goals for Binghamton, while Andrew Girolamo added one goal and one assist. Connor Winters stopped 14 shots and collected one ground ball while in goal for the Bearcats. UMBC was led by Ryan Demato and his six points off three goals and three assists, while Connor Chick added five points off three goals and two assists. Connor McMahon made eight saves in net for the Retrievers.

Binghamton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to goals from Feldmann and Tyler Martini at 14:05 and 12:12. UMBC countered by closing out the opening frame with two goals, one from Demato at 7:22, and a man-up tally from Jake Kucinski at 1:22.

With the game tied at 2 going into the second quarter, the Retrievers opened the next frame with three unanswered goals. Nick Guitierrez began the run with a goal at 13:34, followed by Caiden Merrit's first tally of the day at 11:45. One minute later, Gavin Batelka completed the run for UMBC with a goal at 10:45.

The Bearcats would fight back, however. Just 30 seconds after UMBC's last goal, Ryan Meyers began the comeback with his sixth goal of the season. Girolamo followed suit with a strike at 8:10, before Gavin Jacobsen scored a goal to tie the game at 5 at 6:09. After UMBC went back ahead on a goal by Corey Myers at 1:43, Liam Byrne set up Feldmann with a pass from behind the net. Feldmann caught the ball in front of the crease and fired in his second goal of the half, bringing this conference match to a 6-6 tie going into halftime.

UMBC began the third quarter on another 3-0 run, however. Two goals from Jameson Coffman and one Kucinski helped the Retrievers retake the lead at 9-6 with 9:58 left in the quarter. Just like in the first half, Binghamton looked set to charge back. First, Nolan Sharkey fed Riley Jenkins with a pass on a fast break before Jenkins scored his third goal of the season at 3:06. Then, just before he got knocked down to the ground, Girolamo got the ball to Austin Constable, before the sophomore scored at 1:49 to bring the Bearcats within one at 9-8. But Demato closed out the quarter with two goals in 1:01 to extend UMBC's lead to 11-8 heading into the fourth.

UMBC would ultimately shut out the Bearcats in the final quarter while Chick scored all three of his goals in the last 15 minutes to give the Retrievers the win.
