Men’s Lacrosse defeated in back-and-forth game by Bryant 8-6

Bearcats honor their nine seniors before the game as part of Senior Day

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (2-10, 1-4 America East) went toe-to-toe with Bryant (6-5, 3-2 America East) Saturday, before the Bearcats were ultimately defeated 8-6 at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Gavin Jacobsen, one of nine Binghamton seniors honored before the game as part of Senior Day, led the Bearcats with three points on two goals and one assist. Liam Byrne, meanwhile, scored a career-high two goals. Making his first collegiate start, Danny Healy also caused a team-high two turnovers and collected three ground balls for the Bearcats. In goal, Connor Winters made 12 saves, collected three ground balls and caused one turnover in what was his final start at home.

Bryant was led by Owen West's four points on three goals and one assist, while Zac Amend scored twice for the Bulldogs. James Carr stopped 12 shots in net for Bryant to get the win.

Once the game began, it was Jacobsen who got the Bearcats going, as his 11th goal of the season put Binghamton up 1-0 at 11:21 in the first quarter. But Bryant countered with three unanswered goals to end the first quarter. Jackson Estes, Owen West and Dawson Rielly each picked up a goal to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

At the end of the first quarter, however, West was charged with a one-minute penalty after it was deemed by the officials that the pocket on his stick was too large. Up a player, Binghamton took advantage as Will Fedlmann set up Andrew Girolamo with a goal 38 seconds into the quarter to bring the Bearcats within one. West then put Bryant back up two with a goal at 12:15, before assisting on a goal by Amend at 11:40 to make it 5-2 Bryant. Binghamton got back into the game with a goal from Troeger Lombardini, assisted by Jacobsen, at 8:18. But Bryant would close out the first half with goals from Amend and West to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Binghamton's defense nearly shut out Bryant. The Bulldogs committed 11 turnovers in the final 30 minutes, helping Binghamton fight back. In the third quarter, Byrne scored his first goal of the day at 6:40 after getting the ball from Girolamo to make it 7-4 Bryant at 6:40. Jacobsen then got his second goal of the afternoon with 28 seconds left, bringing Binghamton to a 7-5 deficit entering the fourth quarter.

While Binghamton's defense kept the pressure up on Binghamton, Byrne picked up his second goal of the day thanks to an assist from Lombardini at 3:35. After trailing by four at halftime, the Bearcats now stood at a one-goal deficit.

However, Bryant held the lead before getting an insurance goal from Caden Lennon with 56 seconds left. While Binghamton won the ensuing faceoff, Luke Krebs caused Byrne to turn the ball over, allowing the Bulldogs to run out much of the remainder of the clock to win the game.
