Hartrick Named Chancellor’s Award Winner for Professional Service

Longtime head SID is first-ever Division of Athletics staff member to earn the honor

VESTAL, N.Y. – John Hartrick, who has overseen the Binghamton Division of Athletics Communications office since 1991, has been honored with one of the university's most prestigious awards. He has been named a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Professional Service - marking the first time that a Binghamton athletics staff member has ever earned the accolade.

Hartrick is the longest tenured member of Binghamton's Division of Athletics. When he arrived on campus, the university was still competing at the NCAA Division III level. After a three-year stint at the Division II level (1998-01), Binghamton elevated its program to the Division I level in 2001. Through it all, Hartrick has been the steady guide of the athletic communications office. He oversaw the Division of Athletics utilization of  the internet in the early 1990s, multimedia platforms in the mid to late 2000s and social media platforms in the 2010s. 

"There has been no better ambassador for Binghamton University since 1991 than John Hartrick," Binghamton Director of Athletics Gene Marshall said. "Whether he is writing a press release, conducting a press conference, providing media support to both our coaches and student-athletes, or keeping the local, regional and national media groups updated on both Binghamton University and Bearcat Athletics,  John is the ultimate professional. He has moved this Division of Athletics Communication area from Division III to one of the premier Mid Major Division I programs in the country. John Hartrick is the perfect recipient of the Chancellor's Award!"

In 2016, Hartrick was honored by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) for 25 years of service to the profession. Four years later, he was honored with the Eastern Athletic Communications Association's (EAST-COMM) College Division Irving T. Marsh Award for career contributions to the field of athletic communications.

Writing awards have also been a staple of Hartrick's tenure at Binghamton. He has been honored with 22 writing and media guide publication awards - including eight for "Best in the Nation," seven "National Runner Up" and seven for "Best in the District." Most recently, Hartrick has overseen the Division of Athletics "Winning Edge Magazine," which was established in 2024. That publication has already earned three national awards from the CSC.

In addition to serving as the primary office contact for the men's basketball, women's soccer and baseball programs, Hartrick has been the chair of the Binghamton Athletics Hall of Fame since its inception in 1996. He has also served on dozens of committees in the department and across campus, including the group that selected the "Bearcats" nickname and logo in 1999 prior to the university's transition to NCAA Division I athletics.
