Track and cross country teams check out new home

VESTAL, N.Y. - It was just a slow jog around a 400-meter track but for the Binghamton University Track & Cross Country teams, it was a historic lap on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bearcats got to visit the VISIONS Federal Credit Union Track & Field Facility for the first time since construction was completed earlier this month. Formerly known as the East Gym Track & Field, the $5.6 million overhaul was made possible by a significant investment from VISIONS Federal Credit Union.

The improvements to the 30-year facility focused on completely replacing the existing track to meet NCAA regulations, renovating the long- and triple-area as well as the pole vault area and adding lighting and safety improvements.

"The coaching staff and I could not be happier with the new track facility," head coach Mike Thompson said. "It is absolutely first class. The entire team is looking forward to the excellent training environment, as well as having the ability to host meets in the future. Thank you to Athletic Directors Gene Marshall and Dennis Kalina for their efforts and support, and a special thank you to Visions Federal Credit Union for adding the financial piece to make it all happen. This facility is going to have a positive impact on our program for many years to come."

The groundbreaking ceremony for the VISIONS Federal Credit Union Track & Field facility was held last Sept. 19. Nearly 11 months later, the Bearcats finally got to step foot on the new track.

"We've been waiting for this day for so long," men's senior Nate David said. "To see the finished product come out like this is amazing. This track is so nice and we are all very happy."

"It was totally worth the wait," women's senior Brynn Hogan said. "We saw the pictures beforehand of what this place was going to look like but they didn't do it justice now that we are out here."

The newly-completed VISIONS FCU Track & Field Facility allows Binghamton to host home meets for the first time since the 2013 America East Outdoor Championships. The Bearcats will host a tri-meet against UAlbany and Bucknell on March 27 and hold an invitational on May 1.
