Cross Country sweeps titles at Iona Meet of Champions

Mayclim and DeFilippis capture individual crowns

BRONX, N.Y. – It was a clean sweep for the Binghamton cross country teams on Friday morning at the Iona Meet of Champions, which was held at Van Cortlandt Park.

Junior Bobby Mayclim steered a Bearcat 1-5 finish in the men's 8,000-meter race while fellow junior Alicia DeFilippis led five Binghamton finishers in the top 11 of the women's 5,000-meter competition. In the process, Binghamton won both team titles - something it most recently accomplished in a cross country invitational at the Canisius Alumni Classic last Oct. 18.

"Today was definitely a great start for both teams," head coach Annette Acuff said. "We had several personal best performances on this course. We're very pleased with our fitness to start the season and the work everyone put in during the summer."

Mayclim covered the men's course in a time of 25:16, marking the first individual title of his career. Sophomore Anthony Zazzaro was second (26:02), followed by fellow sophomore George Thomatos in third place (26:04), senior Liam Cody in fourth (26:17) and sophomore Noah Hilker in fifth place (26:25). In addition, junior Oliver Jibb was 14th overall (27:31).

Binghamton finished with a perfect team score of 15 points. The Bearcats were followed in the team standings by Army (40 points), Indiana, Pa. (80) and Lehman (115). There were 36 finishers in the men's race.

The victory by Mayclim is the first by a Binghamton men's runner in a cross country invitational since current assistant coach Josh Stone captured the crown at the Vermont Fall Foliage back on Oct. 20, 2024. In addition, Mayclim's performance on Friday morning was 28 seconds faster than his time of 25:44 at last year's Iona Meet of Champions.

DeFilippis, meanwhile, also recorded her first career invitational championship. She clocked a winning time of 18:40. Fellow junior Eleanor Lees placed second (19:00), followed by sophomore Taylor Page in fourth place (19:18), freshman Julia Duzynski in seventh place (19:35) and fellow freshman Chloe Connolly in 11th place (19:58). Junior Madeline Jensen was 14th overall (20:07).

The Bearcat women's winning team score was 25 points. Second-place Army finished with 55 points followed by Iona (72), St. John's (96), Indiana, Pa. (107) and Lehman (167). There were 37 finishers in the women's race.

DeFilippis is the first Binghamton women's cross country runner to win an individual championship since current senior Anna Gansrow was first at the aforementioned 2025 Canisius Alumni Classic. DeFillipis' time at Iona on Friday morning was also 38 seconds faster than her finish at last year's Meet of Champions (19:18).

Binghamton returns to action at the Lehigh/Paul Short Run on Oct. 2.
