VESTAL, N.Y. – As the 2026-27 academic year begins, so too do the events planned by the Binghamton Student-Athlete Mental Health (SAMH) Committee. Each semester, this student-athlete-led committee organizes mental wellness events for the Athletics Division, raises awareness about mental health resources on campus, and provides an open line of communication between student-athletes and Athletics staff on mental health and well-being initiatives.

The SAMH Committee coordinates the following types of events for student-athletes:

• De-stress events
• Group discussions
• Wellness workshops
• Mental health tabling

"This committee is a great way for teammates from every sport to connect and bond over the unique shared experiences and challenges that come with being a student athlete," women's cross country and track runner Madeline Jensen said. "Our events and meetings throughout the year provide athletes an outlet to de-stress and have fun with fellow teammates, all while destigmatizing the conversation around mental health."

"The mental health committee has provided me with an outlet to come together with friends and do something fun, as well as share and listen to fellow members' struggles and how they cope with stress as athletes," women's soccer player Devis Lillis said. "Since joining the committee, I feel much more seen and understand that I am not alone. Most athletes experience the same stress and issues that I have. This club has also given me the chance to meet other student athletes from different teams which has been awesome!"

With September being World Suicide Prevention Month, the SAMH Committee has planned several events, including a de-stress kickball game, tabling to raise awareness about suicide prevention and a student-athlete suicide prevention training.
