COVID-19 Updates

Dear Incoming and Returning Student-Athletes,

This year, as we are all constantly reminded, is unlike any other and some things have changed from the 2020-2021 student-athlete handbook.  We put together a list of area updates and resources available to you for use in what can be a very challenging time. We believe these will help you in your transition in and out of the classroom.  If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Athletics Department & University Policies
 
Sports Medicine
  1. Access to the Sports Medicine Rooms
    1. Facility Procedures
      1. Traffic Flow - Event Center Sports Medicine Room – enter through the front door and exit through the back door / West Gym Sports Medicine Room – only 1 door to enter and exit from.
      2. Signs will be displayed promoting directions, PPE, distancing, hand washing, sanitizing equipment, etc.
      3. Sanitation - spray bottles – cleaning will be done before and after each use of all tables, equipment, and touch points according to CDC facility sanitation guidelines.
  2. Treatment Procedures
    1. Treatments will be scheduled around practice times and student-athletes may need to make an appointment.
    2. No more than 20 individuals at a time in Event Center Sports Medicine Room and a maximum of 6 individuals in West Gym Sports Medicine Room (inclusive of staff and student-athletes).
    3. Student-athletes must complete a daily COVID-19 wellness check prior to their scheduled treatment time.
      1. Student-athletes who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or are feeling ill will not be evaluated in either Sports Medicine Rooms by Sports Medicine staff.
      2. A Sports Medicine staff member will consult with the ill student-athlete over the phone and then will refer to the Decker Student Health Services Center or UHS.
      3. Any student-athlete who tests positive for COVID-19 will be isolated, must follow DOH requirements, Binghamton University established guidelines for students, and a required Team Physician consult before cleared for any athletic related activity.
    4. Student-athletes must shower before coming for scheduled treatment.
    5. Sports Medicine staff will meet the student-athletes at the entry point for a temperature check.
    6. Masks required to be worn by student-athletes and Sports Medicine staff.
    7. Student-athletes and Sports Medicine staff must wash hands before start of treatment.
    8. Only Sport Medicine staff may access supplies.
    9. Sports Medicine staff will track student-athletes entry into both Sports Medicine Rooms.
      1. Minimally include – date, name, sport, arrival time, and treatment.
    10. No Shared Equipment without proper sanitation before and after use.
  3. Sports Medicine staffing plan
    1. If a Sports Medicine staff member requires quarantine measures another Sports Medicine staff member will step in to provide medical care accordingly. 

Strength & Conditioning - Utilizing Weight Room & Court 4 - Starting on 1/25/21
    Logistics
  1. Student-Athletes (SAs) will be given access to the Events Center (EC) by a Coach or S&C staff through the TAU doors after proof that their SWAY app has been completed (green checkmark).
  2. SAs then go down the stairs next to the elevator, walk down the men’s locker room hallway, and enter the EC floor by the pole vault pit for a warm-up on court 4.
  3. After warm-up, the team will split into 4-5 groups and have designated work-out areas on the EC floor as well as in the weight room.
  4. SAs will enter the weight room by walking down the women's locker room hallway. They will enter by the doors closest to the S&C staff office and exit through the opposite doors.
  5. SAs, Coaches, and S&C staff will be in face coverings and socially distanced (minimally 6 feet apart) throughout the entirety of the workout.
  6. Signage for traffic flow, maintaining socially distance, and proper hygiene will be on display throughout the weight room and court 4.
  7. Once SAs complete their workout, they will leave the EC via the exit doors by the weight room or back out the TAU doors.
    Capacity
    Weight Room – 19 persons
    Court 4 – 25 persons
 
    Cleaning
  1. SA Cleaning – At the completion of their workout, SAs will wipe down (wipes provided) all equipment that they touched / used during their workout.
  2. Staff Cleaning – At the end of a team workout, S&C staff will wipe down highly used equipment again before the next team starts. Also, S&C staff will wipe down high touch areas multiple times per day with the disinfectant physical facilities provided.
  3. Fog Machine – Used twice a week – weight Room and court 4. 
Equipment Issue Room
Due to COVID-19 health concerns, the following changes will apply:
  • There will be no towel and laundry services provided until such time that student-athletes are allowed back into their locker room spaces.  These services may be further modified for specific teams at any time based on health and safety concerns.
  • The Issue Room window hours will be suspended until further notice.
  • Student-athletes who require equipment and/or apparel items must coordinate with their Head Coach.  These items will then be provided to the Head Coach for distribution to the student-athlete.
Facilities & Event Management
    Events Center
  • The Events Center Facilities/Operations office will be open Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-5PM
  • Masks are required at all times inside building
  • All student-athletes and staff are required to enter/exit through the southwest concourse doors (TAU Room entrance)
  • Grand staircase is for upward and downward travel
  • The elevator is available for use with a limited capacity of 2 individuals
  • Aside from team locker rooms and the weight room, all athletic facilities are now open for approved team activities
  • All locker rooms are closed
  • Sports medicine is open by appointment only
  • TAU Room is closed
  • G16 Meeting Room is closed
  • Concourse Games (shuffleboard and ping pong) are not available
  • The Hungry Bearcat is closed
  • Drinking fountains are offline. Fill station is available for use.
    West Gym
  • Building Hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Sports Medicine is open by appointment only
  • Masks are required at all times inside building
  • The gym (69 ALL) is closed
  • All locker rooms are closed
  • Available restrooms are located in the lobby
  • Drinking Fountains are offline. Fill station is available for use.
  • Batting cages are closed
  • The golf room is closed
  • Pool is closed
  • Wrestling room is closed
    Bearcats Sports Complex
  • Bearcat Sports Complex (soccer/lacrosse game and practice fields, baseball field, softball field, tennis courts) is available for approved team activities.
 
Athletics Communications
  • You may be asked by Pipe Dream and local media for an interview related to the COVID-19 and its effect on your sports season. Remember that ALL media interviews need to be coordinated through the athletics communications office. If contacted directly, you can tell the reporter to contact our office first. The interviews will more than likely be via phone or Zoom at your convenience.
  • With any media interviews, please remember the fluid and sensitive nature of this time period. Be positive, stick to topics pertaining to you and your sport and refrain from any criticism or inflammatory opinions. 
  • Athletics communications staff will be covering your teams for competition and various feature interviews throughout the spring semester (with special attention to social distancing and safety precautions). If we have any requests for information or your time commitment, please be prompt in replying.  
Academics & Student-Athlete Success Center
  • The Student-Athlete Success Center (SASC), located in the West Gym, will operate virtually until further notice.  All team and individual student-athlete meetings will be held virtually.  Rooms 54 and 57 will be closed during this time.  With proper safety precautions in place, the goal is to move towards in-person meetings by appointment, including the availability of small group study spaces in the SASC.
  • The primary platform utilized for communication in this virtual environment will be Zoom, which your academic advisor can help you set-up.  Other communication platforms are also acceptable, please coordinate with your academic advisor:

  • Your academic advisor will be in regular communication with you throughout the semester to provide academic advisement, course selection planning and scheduling, and all your other academic related needs.
  • Until further notice, the tutoring program will operate virtually through zoom or any other agreed upon communication tool.
  • Where applicable, study hall requirements will be communicated to you by your coaches and your academic advisor. 
  • Your academic advisor will communicate all available campus resources to you as we navigate the start of the semester.
  • Please monitor your Binghamton University email closely for updates, including student-athlete newsletters and other important information.
 
NCAA Compliance & Financial Aid
  • The Office of NCAA Compliance, located in the West Gym and Events Center, will operate virtually until  further notice.  All team and individual student-athlete meetings will be held virtually.  Requests for an in-person meeting will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
  • The primary platform utilized for communication in this virtual environment will be Zoom.
  • The Office of NCAA Compliance will be in regular communication with you throughout the semester.
