BU men's soccer loses 2-1 at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y.---Leonardo Fernandez had a goal and an assist, as Stony Brook (7-5-1, 3-1-1 AE) held off Binghamton (4-9-1, 0-4-1 AE) 2-1 in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at Lavalle Stadium. The loss marked the Seawolves third straight triumph against the Bearcats, who had taken the previous three meetings in the longtime series.

After a scoreless first half, Stony Brook was awarded a penalty kick and Fernandez successfully converted it, giving him five goals for the season. Three of his goals have come on penalty kicks. In the 70th minute, Fernandez fed the ball to Barien Gobiel, who headed the ball into the net for his team-leading seventh goal of the year.

Binghamton, however, would go away easily as junior forward Jake Keegan headed in his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The assist was credited to fellow junior forward Adam Whitehead.

The Bearcats made a furious bid for the equalizing goal, firing two more shots in the remaining eight minutes of regulation. Their final shot, however, was blocked with 10 seconds to play.

Stony Brook held a 13-12 edge in shots on goal, which included Fernandez' penalty kick. Junior goalkeeper Chris Hayen made five saves for Binghamton.

The Bearcats head to Hartford on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game.

NOTE: In the past four games, two of the four goals surrendered by the Bearcats have come on penalty kicks. Only two of the goals have come during the run of play ... Keegan now has 15 career goals, which ties Bryan Arnault (2003-06) for fifth place all time during the program's 10-year NCAA Division I era.
