VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Stony Brook 19-8 in America East action, Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats (3-6, 0-2 AE) were unable to slow down the Seawolves (8-3, 1-0 AE) allowing a season-high 19 goals. Junior Kimberly McGeever led the Bearcats with three goals and an assist.

In the first half, Stony Brook raced out to a 4-1 lead before senior Lis Zuern created room behind the goal and found McGeever inside the eight-meter for the finish. Down 4-2 with 13:33 left in the half, BU witnessed the Seawolves impose their will going on a 5-0 run over then next 12-plus minutes. Binghamton held a 9-5 advantage in the draw circle but committed 14 first half turnovers, aiding the Stony Brook scoring spurt.

With under two minutes to play in the opening frame, Binghamton continued to fight as junior Katherine Hunsberger chased down a ground ball, keeping possession for BU. She then moved the ball to McGeever, who worked her way inside the fan and fired a bouncer between the legs of the goalie. The McGeever goal snapped the Stony Brook run, as Binghamton added another goal when freshman Brittany Bailey was the beneficiary of a fortunate bounce raking a goal past the keeper with just 14 seconds on the clock. It marked the first collegiate goal for Bailey.

After falling behind 9-2 with just over two minutes to go in the first half, Binghamton rallied for two goals in the last 1:20 to cut the deficit to five, 9-4 at the break.

Binghamton looked to carry its momentum into the second half, but a 5-1 run by the Seawolves to begin the half pushed the margin nine, 14-5 with 21;11 left to play. A yellow card on junior Kristen Stone created a man down situation for the Bearcats, but an effective stick check by defender Isabelle Mahoney caused a Stony Brook turnover. Binghamton successfully cleared the ball when freshman Renee Kiviat found McGeever for her third goal of the game. The man-down goal was the first of the year for BU halting the Stony Brook run, trimming the deficit to eight, 14-6 with 17:02 to play.

The eight-goal deficit would be as close as the Bearcats would get as Stony Brook pushed its lead to ten and eventually 11 with two goals in the final minute. Zuern and junior Casey Bulman attempted to keep Binghamton close with back-to-back goals with 3:26 to go, but Stony Brook worked out its first half draw circle issues, controlling 12 of the 15 second-half draws.

Binghamton committed 26 turnovers and was out shot 39-22 by Stony Brook. The Bearcats went just 1-for-7 in free position shots, unable to capitalize on whistles inside the eight-meter.

Freshman goalie Kara Pafumi made a season-high 12 saves for the Bearcats, while Hunsberger netted two goals, won four draw controls and caused two turnovers.

McGeever and junior attack Claire Petersen were named America East Players of the Game. Petersen finished with five goals and four assists for a game-high nine points.

Binghamton continues its conference schedule as they travel to play defending America East champion Albany in an Interstate 88 battle on Wednesday, April 4. First draw is set for 4 p.m. at Albany's John Fallon Field. Binghamton has never beaten its SUNY rival.
