Men's soccer settles for 2-2 tie at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Junior forward Steven Celeste and senior back Robbie Hughes each scored a goal as Binghamton (3-7-3, 1-1-1 AE) gained a 2-2 tie against Stony Brook (5-6-1, 1-1-1 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Tuesday night at LaVelle Stadium. The Bearcats are now unbeaten in their past two games and have averaged 2.5 goals during that span.

The Bearcats got off to a rough start as they turned the ball over in their own end of the field. Jorge Torres then got the ball and fired a 35-yard blast into the net in the 18th minute.

Celeste deadlocked the game in the 37th minute. His shot from the top of the box resulted in his team-high third goal of the season. Junior midfielder Ben Nicholson was credited with the assist.

Hughes gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead when he finished off a corner kick by Nicholson in the 49th minute. It was his second goal of the season.

That lead, however, lasted all of three minutes. Keith McKenna was in the right place at the right time when a cross from Martin Giordano was deflected right back to him. He then fired the ball into the net to deadlock the game at 2-2.

Stony Brook was credited with a 19-18 shot advantage for the game. In goal, sophomore Stefano Frantellizzi finished with six saves. At the other end, Carlos Villa made eight saves, including a huge one in the final minute of the second overtime period.

Binghamton heads to Hartford on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game.

NOTES: Nicholson's two assists represented his career high. He now has two goals and two assists in the past four games.
