Dusan Perovic drilled six three-pointers and scored a game-high and school-record 34 points but host Boston University (2-4) shot 64 percent in the second half to fend off Binghamton men's basketball (1-7) 77-65 Wednesday night at Case Gym.
Up 34-23 at the break, Boston opened the second half with a 15-5 run to stretch its lead to 49-28. With Perovic's hot hand, the Bearcats kept within striking range but ran out of time. The Terriers aided their cause with 14 three-pointers - seven in each half.
"We fought hard tonight," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "We had a 40-mintute effort. We just couldn't get enough stops to get it down to single digits. Boston played well and shot the ball extremely well and made some difficult threes. But we showed progress."
Perovic (11-of-18 FG) sparked a spirited Bearcats charge midway through the second half. The 6-foot-9 center scored 29 second-half points on 10-for-14 shooting. He is shooting a sizzling 71 percent (15-of-21) from beyond the arc this season.
"Dusan was spectacular," Dempsey said. "What a great overall game he played. He found a nice rhythm and kept us in the game."
Binghamton nearly matched Boston in second-half shooting. The Bearcats shot 50 percent in the period to raise their game percentage to 45 percent.
The Bearcats started the game strong, receiving points from five different players early and building an 11-6 lead eight minutes in. But the Terriers rattled off 11 straight points to forge ahead, 17-11. The hosts then turned up the pressure and stretched it into a 25-5 run that resulted in a 31-16 cushion.
But the Bearcats answered in the waning minutes of the half. Led by freshman guard
Romello Walker, Binghamton scored seven straight points to pull within eight, 31-23. Boston hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds, however, to take a 34-23 lead into intermission. Walker tallied seven points and drew a charge on the defensive end in the final minute. Boston hit seven three-pointers and forced 11 Bearcat turnovers in the opening period.
Walker wound up with 12 points to join Perovic in double figures. He added six rebounds.
Binghamton returns home to play two straight at the Events Center for the first time this season. The Bearcats host Penn at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
