Nick Madray tallied game-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds but visiting Caldwell (6-4) built a 12-point halftime lead and held off Binghamton men's basketball (1-9) 63-52 Monday night at the Events Center.
The Bearcats fell behind 9-0 in the game's first five minutes and hit just six field goals in the opening half. In the second half, BU trailed by as many as 17 points before a 12-3 run brought them to within eight, 52-44, with 1:44 left. But the Cougars went 11-of-11 from the free throw line in the final 1:32 to seal the win.
Madray earned his second career double-double with 6-of-13 shooting (3-of-8 three-pointers). He pulled down 10 defensive rebounds to tie his career high. Sophomore guard
Marlon Beck II added 13 points, five assists and two steals in 27 minutes.
"We have to be better than this," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "We have to get tougher ... more mentally on edge. I was concerned with our intensity tonight. The ball doesn't always go in the basket but we looked sluggish ... guys weren't pressuring the ball and blocking out early in the game. Their game plan was to dare us to beat them from the perimeter. We were pressing to make shots because they were collapsing in the paint. We just couldn't ever get it going tonight. It was a humbling loss. We have to respond to it and the only way is to get back in here and work."
Binghamton next plays at Colgate Thursday night.
