NEWARK, N.J. – Binghamton baseball (6-13) plated 10 runs in the final six innings and rolled past host NJIT (6-11) 10-0 Tuesday night from Riverfront Stadium.

The Bearcats snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning. Binghamton then added two unearned runs courtesy of three Highlander errors in the fifth and tacked on two unearned runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth for the final margin. NJIT had more errors (6) than hits (5) in the game.

With a five-games-in-five-days stretch upcoming, head coach Tim Sinicki used a predetermined rotation and six BU pitchers combined on the five-hit shutout.

Sophomore starter Jake Cryts tossed three scoreless innings to pick up the win. Cryts (2-3) allowed just two hits and struck out four. Junior Anthony Grillini went 2.0 innings and allowed just one hit. Freshman Jextin Pugh got the next five outs before giving way to junior Greg Ostner (1 IP), freshman Casey Wenzel (0.1) and sophomore Mike Bunal, who recorded the final three outs to seal the shutout.

In the fourth, senior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz and senior second baseman Daniel Nevares started with back-to-back singles. Each moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and junior left fielder Jake Thomas delivered a two-run single to right field, giving BU a 2-0 lead. Thomas advanced to second on the throw to the plate and took third on a single by sophomore first baseman Reed Gamache. Freshman DH Brendan Skidmore then plated Thomas with a sacrifice fly to left field.

After Grillini kept his slate clean with a double-play grounder to end the fourth, BU struck for a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, thanks to three host infield errors. The first run came around to score on an errant throw to first from the NJIT catcher with two runners aboard. Then Nevares made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

In the eighth, Nevares singled with one out and after another error, NJIT pitchers walked three of the next four batters, resulting in bases-loaded RBIs from senior shortstop John Howell and sophomore third baseman David Schanz.

Binghamton added three more runs in the ninth – two crossing home on a double to right center by junior first baseman Brian Ruby. Skidmore then notched his second sacrifice fly of the night, bringing home the 10th and final run.

The cushion was more than enough for BU's pitching committee, which collected 10 strikeouts and allowed just three Highlanders to reach second base.

Nevares went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Thomas bumped up his season RBI total to 10 with two driven in.

Binghamton hosts UMBC in its home-opening America East doubleheader Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. First pitch of Game 1 is set for noon.
