Baseball Loses To Bucknell 4-1

Bearcats held to six hits, see four-game win streak snapped

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Bucknell limited Binghamton baseball to one run on six hits and the Bison (17-12-1) posted a 4-1 win Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Binghamton (9-14) was blanked on three hits through eight innings before mounting a threat in the ninth. The Bearcats doubled their hit total with three singles, pushed across a run and brought the tying run to the plate before a comebacker to the mound ended the game.

Bucknell, sitting atop the Patriot League with a 7-1 mark, scored a run in the first inning and added two in the fifth and another in the ninth. The key blow was a two-out, two-run single on a 3-2 pitch in the fifth frame. Freshman reliever Nicholas Liegi nearly had the inning-ending strikeout twice but Bison left fielder Rob Krentzman stayed alive with two nicks at the plate and then sent the third 3-2 offering into left center to score a pair.

The Bearcats had opportunities in the middle innings but left two runners stranded in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. Each team left nine runners aboard. Binghamton also had two runners erased on the basepaths - one picked off first and another thrown out trying to advance on an errant throw.

In the ninth, junior first baseman Brian Ruby singled through the left side with one out. Senior DH Shaun McGraw followed with a single to center. After a pop-up to shallow right, freshman catcher Eddie Posavec drilled an RBI single up the middle, plating Ruby with BU's first run. With runners on first and third and two out, junior right fielder Zach Blanden sent a grounder off the glove of Bucknell pitcher Tucker Rekucki but he recovered in time to get Blanden at first to end the game.

Freshman Casey Wenzel allowed two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings and Liegi gave a solid outing with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits.

Posavec went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Ruby was 2-for-4.

The Bearcats wrap up a five-games-in-five-days stretch with a home game against Cornell at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
