NIAGARA, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer peppered Niagara's defense with 23 shots but the host Purple Eagles (3-1-1) used a pair of second-half goals to defeat the Bearcats (3-4), 2-1 Friday afternoon at Niagara Field. The loss snapped BU's win streak at three.
After a scoreless first half, Niagara got on the board in the 59th minute. Freshman keeper Katie Hatziyianis made a diving save on a blast from the right, but NU defender Bianca Marrara cashed in on the rebound. The hosts doubled their margin in the 72nd minute following a corner kick. The ball ping-ponged around in the box before Niagara senior Haillie Price headed it in.
The Bearcats tallied their lone goal in the 85th minute when junior forward Katherine Corcoran found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Binghamton enjoyed a wide 23-10 margin in shots, including 16 in the first half, but put only seven shots on goal. The Bearcats almost broke through in the 13th minute when Corcoran sent a hard shot toward the corner, only to be stifled by Niagara keeper Claire Feiertag, who wound up with six saves. Senior midfielder Emily Nuss just missed minutes later when her 19-yard free kick rang off the crossbar.
"It was a matter of finishing opportunities today," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "Niagara did a good job of finishing their chances and we weren't able to finish ours."
Senior Gaby Gold made two saves in her scoreless first half between the pipes. Hatziyianis also notched two saves in the second half.
Binghamton will remain in the Buffalo area to face Canisius at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
