VESTAL, N.Y.- The Binghamton wrestling team beat Buffalo, 24-12, at the West Gym Friday night. The Bearcats (7-10) won the last six matches of the dual to rally past the Bulls (5-12) on senior night.
Â
After seeing his teammates drop the first two bouts,
Dylan Caruana looked to turn the tide in BU's favor. He fell behind to Colt Cotten in their 141-pound match, but Caruana's takedown in the final thirty seconds of the third period gave Caruana and the Bearcats a much-needed victory.
Â
Buffalo responded with a win in the 149-pound match, but
Vincent DePrez put together a strong match and picked up a 6-1 win over Ryan Kromer in the 157-pound contest. DePrez scored in the first period and then accumulated plenty of riding time to record his 17
th win of the season.
Â
In the 165-pound bout,
Zack Zupan posted two takedowns in the opening frame, going ahead, 4-1, after three minutes. He controlled the rest of the match on his way to an 8-2 decision.
Â
Steve Schneider kept the Bearcats' momentum going in the 174-pound contest, defeating Wally Maziarz, 5-0. After a scoreless first period, Schneider came through with a takedown in the second frame, gaining control and eventually winning the bout and tying the dual.
Â
In the 184-pound match,
Jack McKeever and Joe Ariola competed in a dramatic contest. Neither wrestler could gain much of an advantage until McKeever, the 33
rd-ranked grappler in his weight class, executed a takedown with less than thirty seconds remaining in the third period, giving the junior a 3-1 decision. The win put Binghamton ahead, 15-12, in the dual.
Â
Caleb Wallace clinched the dual victory for the Bearcats in the 197-pound contest. He dominated James Benjamin throughout their match, coming away with an 11-1 major decision.
Â
Tyler Deuel, tabbed No. 22 in the latest NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, overpowered Ian James in their heavyweight contest. Deuel, a senior, racked up points throughout the first two periods, posting an 18-0 technical fall.
Â
At the start of the night, seven Bearcat seniors were recognized for their efforts-Deuel, Wallace, White,
Vincent Grella,
Vlad Mordach,
Colton Perry, and
Ben Price.
Â
"These guys embody everything that Binghamton prides itself in. They're great student-athletes, they're great character kids," said Coach
Matt Dernlan. "They've been leaders for us. I couldn't be more proud of what they've done for the program and how they represent the university."
Â
The Bearcats will compete at Bucknell and Bloomsburg to close out the regular season next weekend.
