VESTAL, N.Y. - After seven days and three cancelled games, Binghamton baseball will return to the field when the Bearcats (4-8) play a single non-conference game at Bucknell (9-6) Tuesday in Lewisburg, Pa. First pitch between the two NCAA tournament teams from a year ago is set for 3 p.m. at Depew Field.
Binghamton had its three-game weekend set at Villanova scrapped due to snow, so the Bearcats haven't played since defeating Stony Brook 13-2 on March 16. The team's offense has started to heat up, despite the miserable weather in the Northeast. In the last five games (three wins), BU has scored nearly eight runs per game.
Senior right fielder
Jake Thomas ranks third in the America East in both hitting (.405) and slugging (.595). Thomas also has a team-best 11 RBI. Senior center fielder
Zach Blanden ranks fourth in the America East with 13 runs scored and is hitting .381. Junior second baseman
Reed Gamache is hitting .326 with nine RBI.Â
The pitching staff held down a 4.70 ERA in the Stony Brook series. A committee of hurlers is expected to see 1-2 innings apiece at Bucknell. Redshirt freshman Jake Wloczewski (0-0, 7.11 ERA) will start the game. The Bearcats have a three-game conference set at UMBC upcoming on the weekend so 23rd-year head coach
Tim Sinicki will spread out the innings.
The host Bison, reigning Patriot League champions, have won five of their last seven, including a twinbill sweep of Cornell on Sunday. Against the Big Red, Bucknell posted wins of 2-1 and 8-7 to take the final three games of the four-game set. Earlier in the "spring," the Bison beat Wake Forest and then took three games from VCU. Junior second baseman Joe Ogren leads the team in batting average (.424), home runs (4) and RBI (17). Senior right fielder Anthony Gingerelli is hitting .377 and has scored 17 runs. Bucknell's pitching staff has an ERA of 4.16. Â
Last year Bucknell won 31 games, including one at the NCAA Regional. The team returns eight starters and three weekend pitchers from that NCAA squad and Patriot League coaches and SIDs picked Bucknell unanimously to repeat as champions in 2015. Â
Bucknell leads the all-time series 6-5. Last year, the Bison posted a 4-1 win in Vestal. In 2013, the teams split a twinbill in Lewisburg.
