Wrestling Travels to Philadelphia for Pair of EIWA Matches

VESTAL, N.Y.- The Binghamton wrestling team travels to Philadelphia for two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) matches this weekend. The Bearcats wrestle at Drexel on Friday, January 22, at 7 p.m. and then compete at Penn on Sunday, January 24, at 1 p.m.

Coach Matt Dernlan's squad is 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the EIWA. It split two bouts last weekend, falling at Columbia, 18-17, before taking care of Hofstra, 31-10. Frankie Garcia, Steve Schneider, Jack McKeever, and Mark Tracy each went 2-0 over the weekend. McKeever, now ranked 28th in the Wrestling Report rankings, defeated two ranked foes in his pair of outings.

Drexel has a 4-6 record, including a 1-2 conference mark. The Dragons fell at Navy, 25-14, and then beat American, 21-16, last weekend. They won the last five bouts of their match at American, rallying to take down the Eagles.

Penn is 2-1 this season, with all three of their duals coming against EIWA opponents. It won on the road twice Sunday, beating Sacred Heart, 31-6, and Army West Point, 24-12. Ray Bethea and May Bethea both win twice, with May Bethea claiming a 2-1 overtime win against then-14th-ranked Russell Parsons of Army.

Schneider is tabbed 20th among 184-pounders in the latest Wrestling Report rankings. He has a 14-4 mark, including a 7-1 dual record this season. McKeever is 10-6 overall and 7-2 in dual competition. The 174-pound senior is 28th in the Wrestling Report standings.

Matt Cimato is the lone Dragon in this week's rankings. The 149-pounder is 23-4 overall, including a 10-0 record in dual action. Six Quakers are ranked, with C.J. Cobb (149) 11th, Lorenzo Thomas (184) 12th, Casey Kent (174) 17th, Ray Bethea (165) 27th, Caleb Richardson (133) 29th, and May Bethea (157) 31st. Thomas paces Penn with 18 wins this season, while Cobb and Kent have 16 apiece.

Last season, Binghamton defeated Drexel, 22-14, and dropped a 26-10 decision to Penn. Schneider won his match in both duals.
