MIAMI, Fla. - On the heels of the team's big win over Long Beach State, Binghamton men's basketball looks to make it three out of four in Florida when the Bearcats (4-3) tip against Florida International (2-4) at 7 p.m. Sunday night.Â
Binghamton has alternated wins and losses through its first seven games this season but the last win - a 72-64 victory over a Long Beach State team that was ranked No. 19 in the latest Mid-Major Poll - likely turned some heads. The 49ers were picked to win the Big West and have played in national postseason tournaments four times in the last six years, including a pair of NCAA trips and an NIT appearance last season. Long Beach followed up the BU loss by pushing Florida Gulf Coast to overtime in a narrow defeat on Friday.Â
On Binghamton's current Florida trip, the team is averaging 73.3 points on 46 percent shooting. Four players are scoring in double figures - junior forwards
Bobby Ahearn (13.0 ppg.) and
Dusan Perovic (11.7), redshirt sophomore guard
J.C. Show (10.3) and redshirt junior guard
Yosef Yacob (10.0).
Making the upset of Long Beach all the more impressive was the fact that BU played without two starters - all-conference forward
Willie Rodriguez and sophomore center
Thomas Bruce. Rodriguez continues to rehab an injury and Bruce sat out the game with an illness. Perovic talliled season-highs of 21 points and eight rebounds and Show added 21 points (9-of-9 FT) and three assists. Yacob (3-of-3 3-pt FG) chipped in 15 points and three assists.  Â
Florida International has lost three games by five or fewer points but is coming off an 89-72 win over the same Ave Maria team BU beat by 18 points one night earlier. In that game, seniors Donte McGill and Elmo Stephen netted 23 and 20 points, respectively and FIU snapped a halftime tie with 69 percent shooting in the second half.Â
The Panthers return three starters and eight lettermen from a 13-19 team and they were picked to finish 11th (out of 14) in the strong Conference USA.
In the first meeting between the two teams last season, visiting FIUÂ rolled over BU 66-49 at the Events Center. The Panthers used their considerable size advantage to tally 46 points in the paint and stretched a seven-point halftime lead with 60% shooting in second half.Â
