Men's basketball faces Cornell Monday

After opening win, BU makes short drive to Ithaca for 7 p.m. matchup against Big Red

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's basketball (1-0) renews its rivalry with its closest geographic opponent when the Bearcats face host Cornell (0-1) at 7 p.m. Monday night.

Binghamton opened its season with a 76-59 win over Morgan State Friday night at the Events Center. In that game, BU put four players in double figures and used a 20-2 second-half-opening run to pull away. Junior guard J.C. Show scored 12 of his 14 points during a 3:31 span to spark that decisive run. He was one of three Bearcats with 14 points as senior forward Willie Rodriguez and junior center Thomas Bruce also hit the 14-point mark. Rodriguez hit 5-of-7 for his points and Bruce notched a double-double with 14 rebounds as well. Bruce also had four blocks and two steals in a busy 28 minutes. Sophomore guard Fard Muhammad added 11 points.

Cornell is coming off a 77-45 loss at Syracuse Friday night. In that game SU opened the second half on a 19-4 run to pull away after the Big Red played a tight first half. Junior Matt Morgan scored 14 points and freshman Jimmy Boeheim, playing against and on the same court named for his Hall of Fame member father, netted 11 points with five rebounds in his first collegiate game.

The Big Red are picked to finish sixth in the Ivy League a year after going 8-21 overall and 4-10 in conference play. Like the Bearcats, the Big Red graduated a 1,000-point scorer. Robert Hatter is gone after amassing 1,241 points for Cornell (10th all time). The team does return 70 percent of its scoring and 74 percent of its rebounding from last season. One familiar name on the squad is the 6-foot-8 freshman forward Boeheim. Cornell also touts two-time All-Ivy League selection Morgan, the two-time reigning conference scoring leader.

Cornell leads the all-time series 8-4, though since Binghamton elevated to Division I, the matchup is much closer (Cornell leads 5-4). The Bearcats won last year's season opening tilt 68-62 at the Events Center. In that game, Show scored a game-high 23 points and Binghamton shot 56 percent in the second half. Show (8-for-13 FG) tallied 16 of his points in the decisive second half, including a key three-pointer at the end of the shot clock with 1:29 left that sealed the win. The Bearcats made three free throws in the final minute to secure it. Dusan Perovic added 14 points as BU put up a solid offensive number despite playing without leading scorer and all-conference forward Rodriguez, who sat out with an injury.
