Wrestling Finishes Competition at South Beach Duals

| By:

Bearcats faced No. 4 Minnesota, wrestled against six nationally ranked wrestlers in two duals today

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. - The Binghamton wrestling team finished their competition at the South Beach Duals. The Bearcats, having to overcome many adversities, went 1-4 on the weekend, including duals against two B1G opponents, one nationally ranked at fourth in the country.

"The South Beach Duals was a great event for our team," acting head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "We were able to wrestle a lot of competitive matches, against four teams that are all on different tiers of Division I competition. Wrestling B1G teams is always a really big deal for us, because they're kind of the gold standard for college wrestling. And when we can go out and compete with teams like that, like we've done against Penn State, Indiana, Michigan State and Minnesota today as well, that's really important for our program to build forward."

The Bearcats started day two of the South Beach Duals with a match against B1G Michigan State in which three of the Bearcats four bout victories came from bonus point wins. Redshirt senior Jake Nicholson recorded a pin over Nathan Ellis at 4:54, and redshirt juniors Vincent DePrez and Anthony Lombardo won by majors 15-5 and 12-3, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Frankie Garcia had the fourth and final win of the day with a 6-1 decision over Jwan Britton.

Against No. 4 Minnesota, the Bearcats took the mat against four nationally ranked opponents out of nine contested bouts. At 149 pounds, Garcia earned Binghamton's only six team points from a win by forfeit. The Golden Gophers went on to take the other nine matches.

"Wrestling against Minnesota gave us an idea of what going up against some of the best guys in the country is like," Borshoff said. "It's a good feel to get, still early in the season, so that by the time we get to the national tournament we understand the type of wrestling our opponents will be bringing to the table and that we'll be ready to compete with them come that time."

The Bearcats finish out their stay in Florida before heading back to Binghamton to get ready for the Franklin & Marshall Open on Saturday, January 6. After that, Borshoff's squad will get ready for a string of EIWA matches, starting with Columbia and Hofstra on Sunday, January 14.
