Bearcats defeat Colgate 165-129, improve to 3-0 in dual meets

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Sophomore Kaitlyn Smolar won three events, leading Binghamton to a 169-125 win over Colgate in an a women's swimming & diving meet on Saturday afternoon at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center. The victory, which raised the Bearcats' dual meet record to 3-0, held in conjunction with the program's CODE PINK event, which was aimed at raising awareness for breast cancer.

Smolar captured the 200 free (1:58.24), the 500 free (5:15.15) and 1650 free (17:45.43). It marks the second meet in a row she has won three individual events.

The Bearcats also had three double winners against the Raiders. Senior Brooke Pettis was first in the 100 fly (57.91) and 200 fly (2:08.25), sophomore Erica Bachiller swept the 100 back (59.64) and 200 back (2:10.93) and junior Olivia Santos took top honors in the 50 free (24.81) and the 100 free (53.54).

Other individual winners for Binghamton including junior Sydney Atendido in the 100 breast (1:06.90), freshman Kelli O'Shea in the 200 IM (2:13.85) and sophomore Sophia Howard in the one-meter diving event. Howard's score nearly met the NCAA Zone qualifying standard (265).

"Colgate brought a lot of good races today and it wasn't an easy meet for us," head coach Brad Smith said. "But we had a dominant run of first-place finishes today. Colgate had some good swims but we were able to match that and surpass that in a lot of the races."

Despite not taking part in a dual meet, the men's team set four pool records in a Green-White intrasquad meet.

Senior Alex Brion played a part in three of those pool records. His leadoff leg in the 200 free relay had a split of 20.90 which broke the pool record in the 50 free. The old mark of 20.99 was set by Brian McKenna in 2004.

That same 200 medley free relay quartet, which also included sophomore Patrick Wilson, senior Matthew Devito and junior Tyler Myers, set the pool record with a time of 1:23.81. The old mark of 1:24.08, set by Cornell, had stood since 2008.

Brion and Wilson were also part of the 200 medley relay team that broke the pool record with a time of 1:32.74. The other two members were sophomore Shane Morris and junior Ross Bernstein. The old mark of 1:33.72 was set by Binghamton in 2010.

The most impressive record, however, was set by Bernstein in the 200 fly. His time of 1:50.59 smashed David's Holmes' 2006 pool record of 1:52.05. Holmes was a 2007 NCAA qualifier and held the America East Conference Meet record in that event from 2007-12.

"Even though we did not race another team today, the men's team had some great swims today," Smith said. "Alex Brion was so close to breaking the 50 free record last week so we're glad he was able to do it today. What Ross Bernstein did in the 200 fly was pretty special. David Holmes' name is all over our record book and the conference record book."

Outside the pool, the swimming & diving held its first-ever CODE PINK event, which was aimed at raising awareness for breast cancer. Pettis came up with the idea in September and with the help of the Binghamton Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), the swim team was able to combine that with the meet against Colgate.

The pool was decorated in pink and members of SAAC set up tables on the concourse with information and activities all geared towards breast cancer awareness. Both the Bearcat men's and women's squads also wore pink caps and some of the Binghamton coaches wore pink shirts.

"I can't say enough about Brooke Pettis and the job she did with this event," Smith said. "She came to me back in September and asked me about combining a meet with breast cancer awareness activities. Both our teams got behind the idea and we are very appreciative SAAC was willing to help out while we swam."

The men's team returns to action for a home dual meet against NJIT on Nov. 17. Both Bearcat squads then close out the fall portion of the season at Canisius on Dec. 1.

NOTES: The meet against Colgate was also attended by several Binghamton swimming & diving alumni. The Bearcats held an Alumni Dinner following the meet.
