Women's Basketball Hosts Yale in WBI Second-Round Game

Bearcats and Bulldogs Tip Off Tuesday at 7 p.m.










STORY LINES
 
- Binghamton (20-11) is making its first-ever appearance in a NCAA Division I national post season game. The Bearcats have been at the NCAA Division I level since the 2001-02 season. Binghamton was a NCAA Division II program from 1998-01 and competed at the Division III level up through the 1997-98 campaign. This marks just the second home national post season game at any level for Binghamton. It hosted the 1998 NCAA Division III Tournament second-round game against Elmira.
 
- In its first-round WBI game, Binghamton rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second period to win 70-59 at Youngstown State on Wednesday. Senior guard Imani Watkins poured in a game-high 27 points while senior center Alyssa James finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Redshirt junior Jasmine Sina added 10 points and a team-best six assists.
 
- Yale (16-13) is making its second all-time national postseason tournament appearance and its first since the 2011 WNIT.  The Bulldogs won 68-58 at Northeastern in their first-round WBI game on Thursday night. Jen Berkowitz led Yale with 23 points while Roxy Barahman finished with 12 points and Tori Andrew added 12 points.
 
- Yale holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series, including a 73-67 overtime victory back on Dec. 2 at the Events Center. James and Watkins each scored 23 points for the Bearcats but Barahman netted a game-high 24 points in the winning effort for Yale.
 
- Watkins, the America East Player of the Year, continues to lead the America East and ranks No. 23 in the nation with 20.5 points per game. She is also tied for second in the America East in steals (2.3 spg.).
 
- James, the three-time America East Defensive Player of the Year, is tops in the conference and third in the nation with 3.5 blocks per game. She is also first in the America East -- and No. 34 in the nation -- in rebounding (9.9 rpg.). 
 
- As a team, Binghamton leads the America East and is tied for eighth in the nation with 6.0 blocks per game. The Bearcats are also first in the America East in rebounding (39.7 rpg.) and second in scoring defense (57.0 ppg.). In addition, Binghamton is No. 20 in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.358) and No. 32 in scoring defense.  
 
- Berkowitz, who leads Yale with 14.4 points per game, was named first-team All-Ivy League. Tamara Simpson, meanwhile, repeated as the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. She is averaging 13.9 points and 4.2 steals per game. As a team, Yale leads the Ivy League with 10.5 steals per game.
 
- The Bearcats' victory total this season has already set their highest mark during their NCAA Division I era. Previously, Binghamton went 19-9 in 2001-02 and 19-12 in 2010-11.
 
- Watkins and James have already etched their names in the record books this season. James has broken both the Binghamton and America East single-season and career records for blocks (107 and 267 respectively). Watkins, meanwhile, has 2,102 career points, which ranks first all-time in Binghamton history and No. 10 in America East Conference history.
 
Milestones to Watch For in the Second round of the WBI...
 
- Binghamton is aiming to became the first America East team ever to advance to the WBI semifinals
- With 2,102 career points, senior guard Imani Watkins needs six points to tie Sherri Turnbull of Vermont (1990-94) for ninth all time in America East history with 2,108 career points.
- With 207 career assists, redshirt junior guard Jasmine Sina needs one more to tie Viive Rebane (2008-12) for 10th place all time in Binghamton program history.
- With 262 career steals, senior guard Imani Watkins needs seven more thefts to tie Marlo Foley for second place all time in program history (269).
