VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball digs into its conference schedule when the Bearcats (4-13, 1-2 America East) head to Baltimore to face UMBC (5-14, 2-1 AE) in a three-game weekend set. The teams will play a single game at 3 p.m. Friday and finish up with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon at grass-surface Alumni Field.
Six of BU's next seven games will be against America East opponents as the Bearcats look to shrug off an uncharacteristic slow start to the 2018 campaign. After opening with a 2-2 mark, Binghamton has dropped 11 of its last 13 games, though six of those defeats have been by two or fewer runs.
Last weekend BU hosted BIG EAST power St. John's and lost a pair of games, though the final scores didn't reflect the even nature of the contests.
In the team's conference-opening series two weeks ago, BU took one of three at Stony Brook, losing late leads in each of the defeats.
Junior outfielder
Anthony Meduri leads the team and ranks third in the conference with a .368 average. Meduri has six doubles and 11 RBI. Senior catcher
Jason Agresti is hitting .323 and ranks third in the conference with eight doubles. Senior center fielder
CJ Krowiak is tied for seventh in the league with 12 RBI. The Bearcats are hitting .232 as a team.
On the hill, BU will send out its conference starting trio of senior right-hander
Jacob Wloczewski, senior lefty
Nick Wegmann and junior right-hander
Nick Gallagher.
UMBC began its season with a 2-1 win over Penn State and the defending America East champion Retrievers also have non-conference wins over Towson and Mt. St. Mary's. In the team's opening America East series, UMBC took two of three from Hartford, winning 3-2 and 9-5 after opening with a 14-3 setback. The team graduated more than half its players from its 2017 run to the NCAA Regionals. The team was picked to finish sixth out of seven in the Coaches' Preseason Poll.
Sophomore closer Stephen Schoch ranks second in the conference in saves (4) and strikeouts (36). The Retrievers are hitting .201 as a team and have a 6.56 pitching ERA.
Binghamton owns a 44-14 advantage in the all-time series. The Bearcats are 20-7 in Baltimore, although UMBC has won four of the last six head-to-head games at home. Last season, BU won two of three games in Vestal.
