Baseball heads to Hartford for three-game series

Riding six-game unbeaten streak, BU opens against Hawks at 2 p.m. Friday

VESTAL, N.Y. - Surging Binghamton baseball 9-15-1, 5-4 America East) heads to Hartford for a three-game America East series against the Hawks (10-19, 5-4 AE). The teams will play a single game at 2 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday at Fiondella Field. 

The Bearcats and Hawks are in a three-way tie for third place in the America East standings (behind Stony Brook and UMBC) with just about two-thirds of the conference slate still remaining (15 games). Binghamton is the two-time reigning conference regular season champion. 

Binghamton has a current six-game unbeaten streak, having won five straight before Tuesday's 5-5 tie at Cornell. Last weekend, BU flexed its muscle with a three-game home sweep of UMass Lowell. The Bearcats rank third in the conference in pitching ERA (5.12) and fifth in hitting (.240). 

Junior right fielder Anthony Meduri ranks fifth in the conference in average (.337) and seventh in doubles (8). Senior catcher Jason Agresti is eighth in batting (.326), fifth in on-base percentage (.440) and third in doubles (10). Senior shortstop Paul Rufo has taken over the team lead with 16 RBI and shares the home run lead with senior center fielder CJ Krowiak (3). 

Junior Nick Gallagher (2-4, 6.61 ERA) will pitch Friday's opener. Seniors Nick Wegmann (2-4, 4.14 ERA) and Jacob Wloczewski (1-4, 6.62 ERA) will start Saturday's games.

Hartford ranks second in the conference in both hitting (.262) and pitching (5.09 ERA). The Hawks won two of three games at Albany and at home against Maine to move over the .500 mark in AE play. The team lost two of three at UMBC to start league play. Hartford had early-season losses to top-20 teams Oregon State (No. 2) and South Alabama (No. 17). They split midweek games, beating Quinnipiac, 10-2 on Tuesday and losing 5-4 at Marist in 11 innings on Wednesday.

Senior leadoff hitter and left fielder Nick Campana leads the America East with a .382 average. He has 11 doubles and 19 RBI. Junior right fielder Ashton Bardzell is hitting .333 with a team-best 23 RBI. 

Binghamton holds a commanding 48-13 lead in the all-time series and has won the last nine head-to-head matchups, including a three-game sweep in Vestal last May.
