VESTAL, N.Y. - Halfway through the conference schedule, Binghamton baseball (9-20-1, 5-7 America East) returns home to host Albany (15-15, 5-7 AE) in a three-game weekend series. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday and finish up with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.
Binghamton is looking to snap a six-game winless streak and climb the conference standings. The Bearcats and Albany are mired in last place, but sit just three games out of first place in the congested standings. Binghamton has won the last two America East regular season titles and BU was picked to repeat again this season. There are four weekend series' remaining - three of which will be played at the Complex.Â
The last time BU played at home it swept a three-game set from UMass Lowell, outscoring the River Hawks 18-3. But since, BU has been held to 17 combined runs in a six-game slide that most recently included a twinbill setback at Marist on Wednesday, 2-1 and 6-2. The Bearcats rank sixth in the AE in hitting (.245) and third in pitching (5.10).Â
Junior right fielder
Anthony Meduri leads the team with a .327 average. Senior first baseman
Luke Tevlin is hitting .314 and senior catcher
Jason Agresti (.300) has a team-high 11 doubles and 16 RBI. Senior shortstop
Paul Rufo leads the team with 18 RBI.
Set to start the weekend games are junior
Nick Gallagher (2-4, 6.44 ERA), senior
Nick Wegmann (2-5, 4.93 ERA) and senior
Jacob Wloczewski (1-5, 6.20 ERA). Sophomore
Ben Anderson has earned the most innings out of the pen. He has a sparkling 1.64 ERA in 10 appearances (22.0 IP) and opponents are hitting just .200 against him.Â
Albany is hitting .248 as a team and has a 5.28 pitching ERA. The Great Danes went 1-2 against UMass Lowell, lost all three at Maine, went 1-2 against Hartford and then picked up a big three-game sweep of Stony Brook last weekend, winning a pair of one-run games. With its 11-2 win at FDU on Tuesday, the team has now won five straight games. Albany doesn't have a hitter batting over .300. Junior left fielder Patrick Lagravinese is hitting a team-high .288 with 15 RBI. Senior center fielder Connor Powers has team-bests of five home runs and 21 RBI.   Â
The Great Danes are expected to start freshman right-hander John Clayton (3-3, 3.98 ERA) and junior righty Dominic Savino (5-2, 4.14 ERA) on Saturday with Sunday's starter still to be announced.Â
Since both teams joined the America East in 2002, BU leads the head-to-head series 42-30. Binghamton has won nine of the last 11 matchups, though the Great Danes stung top-seeded BU with a 7-3 win last May at the America East tournament. Binghamton is 17-10 at home in the series. In the all-time matchup, which dates back to 1950, Albany leads 60-51.Â
