Bearcats headed to Ohio, Western Pa. for games at Youngstown State and Pitt

VESTAL, N.Y. - After a 10-day break for final exams, Binghamton men's basketball returns to the floor for a rare two-game road swing to Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. Winners of five of their last seven, the Bearcats (5-5) face Horizon League member Youngstown State on Wednesday before traveling an hour southeast to meet ACC member Pitt on Friday.

Last time out
• On Dec. 7 at home, sophomore guard Sam Sessoms scored a school-record 40 points (28 after halftime) to steer BU to an 84-79 overtime win over Boston Univ.
• Sessoms also set a school record with 15 field goals
• Senior guard Richard Caldwell, Jr. added his first double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds
• The Bearcats made 5-of-8 FG in OT (Boston was 4-for-11) and Sessoms scored nine of his points in the extra period

About Youngstown State
• YSU is 5-5 heading into its Sunday home game against Southeast Missouri State
• The Penguins return all five starters and nine lettermen from a 12-20 team that went 8-10 in the Horizon League
• YSU was picked to finish sixth (of 10) in the 2019-20 HL Preseason Poll
• Sophomore guard Darius Quisenberry was a preseason all-conference selection and leads the team in scoring and assists
• YSU uses a nine-man rotation with only one player (Bohannon) logging more than 28 minutes per game (BU has three with 28+ minutes per game)

All-time series vs. Youngstown State
• The teams met for the first time last year in Vestal and YSU won 58-48
• In that game, YSU held Binghamton to 33 percent shooting, built a nine-point halftime cushion and held the Bearcats 23 points under their season scoring average. Binghamton made just seven shots in the first half (2-for-12 from 3-point range), couldn't find any offensive rhythm and came no closer than nine points over the game's final 13 minutes.

BU vs. Horizon League
Binghamton is 0-2 all-time vs. the Horizon League, having lost at Oakland in 2015 and last year against Youngstown State

About Pitt
• Pitt is 7-3 heading into its Monday home game against Northern Illinois
• The Panthers return three of their top four scorers from a 14-19 team of a year ago
• Pitt was picked to finish 10th (of 15) in the rugged ACC this season
• Sophomore guard Xavier Johnson was an All-ACC Freshman Team selection last year and was the only player in the ACC to average at least 15.0 points and 4.5 assists
• The Panthers have won at an 81 percent clip at the Petersen Center since it opened in 2002-03 (255-61) and the home wins are sixth-most in the NCAA during that span

All-time series vs. Pitt
• The teams have met just once, a 71-46 Pitt home win on Nov. 17, 2009 as part of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic
• After losing four starters just weeks before the 2009-10 season, BU was undermanned in the lopsided road loss
• Pitt held BU to five first-half field goals, led by 20 at intermission and cruised in front of 7,677 fans at The Pete

BU vs. ACC
Binghamton is 1-7 all-time vs. teams from the ACC with the lone win being a stunning 79-74 upset over University of Miami on Dec. 20, 2006 in Miami. The Bearcats have lost against Duke, North Carolina, Florida State, Notre Dame (2x), Boston College and Syracuse.

Tinsley leads nation in minutes played
Freshman forward George Tinsley played the entire 45 minutes in BU's overtime win over Boston University and he now leads the nation in minutes per game (39:17). Tinsley has played a full game five times this season.

Bearcats boast four different players with double-doubles
With the most recent double-double by senior guard Richard Caldwell, Jr., BU now has four different players produce a double-double this season. Freshman forward George Tinsley has four, sophomore guard Sam Sessoms and senior forward Pierre Sarr have two apiece. That's the most of any BU team in school history and also leads the America East this season.

Bearacts among the America East, NCAA stat leaders
Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms leads the America East in assists (4.7), is second in both scoring (20.2) and free throw percentage (89%). Freshman forward George Tinsley leads the nation in minutes (39.3/game). Tinsley is third in the America East in rebounding (9.0) and is averaging 11.9 points, third-best among conference freshmen. Senior forward Pierre Sarr is fourth in the AE in rebounding (8.6). Freshman guard Brenton Mills leads the AE in 3-point percentage (.424), ranks sixth in 3-pointers per game (2.5) and is second to Tinsley in minutes (34.7/game).

Sessoms already approaching 800 career points
Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms is averaging 20.2 points this season and has quickly moved his career total to 790 points less than halfway through his second collegiate season. He currently ranks 13th in Div. I era scoring at Binghamton and his career average (18.4 ppg.) is on pace to make him the program's all-time scoring leader (1,705 pts.) by the end of his junior season and surpass the 2,000-point mark by the time he graduates.

Sarr banging boards of late
Senior forward Pierre Sarr is on a rebound tear in his last five games. He has reached double figures in four of those and is averaging 12.0 rpg. during that stretch. Sarr ranks fourth in the conference in rebounds (8.4).

Mills sizzling from backcourt
Freshman guard Brenton Mills has quickly and quietly become a crucial element to the Bearcats' starting lineup early in his collegiate career. Mills is averaging 12.0 points, second-best among America East freshmen. He is shooting a conference-best 42% from 3-point range and 81% from the line (13-for-16). Mills hit 5-of-7 3-pointers against Colgate and has scored in double-figures in five of his last six games.
