Bearcats open weekend series at Mercer Friday night

VESTAL, N.Y. - Winners of three in a row, Binghamton baseball (4-6) begins its spring break trip to Georgia with a three-game set at Mercer University (10-8). The teams will play single games Friday night, Saturday and Sunday at Orthogeorgia Park in Macon, Ga.

The Bearcats are coming off a weekend sweep of VMI. In that series, BU pitchers held down a 2.33 ERA and senior Sean Trenholm and junior Daniel Franchi contributed four RBI apiece. Sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall hit .333 with two doubles and sophomore catcher Sam Freedman hit .429.

Junior pitcher Ben Anderson earned America East Pitcher of the Year honors after stifling the Keydets with eight strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Anderson, BU's Game 2 starter, is 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA in four starts this spring. Senior Nick Gallagher (0-2, 4.32 ERA) will take the hill for Friday's 6 p.m. opener. Junior Jake Miller (1-1, 3.24 ERA) will start Sunday's finale.

Trenholm leads the team with a .421 season average and seven RBI. Freedman is hitting .333.

The Bears have already played 18 games and are 9-4 at home this spring. Three of the team's defeats came at the hands of No. 11 Florida State. On Tuesday, Mercer toppled Savannah State 8-1. The team returned four position starters and 12 pitchers from a 38-22 team that was runnerup in the Southern Conference. Mercer is one of just five programs in the nation to win 35 or more games in each of the last eight seasons.
