VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (7-8, 0-0) will host Maine (1-17, 0-0 AE) in an abbreviated America East-opening series Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. After waiting a day with temperatures near freezing on Saturday, the teams wil now play only a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. The first game is nine innings and the second is scheduled for seven innings.  Â
Binghamton has won six of its last eight games and seven of 10 since opening the season 0-5. The Bearcats went 3-2 on their spring break trip to Georgia, winning two of three at Mercer and splitting a pair of games at Kennesaw State.Â
Junior second baseman
Alex Baratta, BU's Athlete of the Week after hitting .667 last week, leads the team with a .357 average. Senior designated hitter
Sean Trenholm is batting .333 with a team-high eight RBI. Sophomore center fielder
Shane Marshall leads the team with 13 runs scored.Â
Senior rightyÂ
Nick Gallagher (0-2, 5.06 ERA) and junior right-hander
Ben Anderson (2-1, 3.24 ERA) will start Sunday's games. Anderson is the two-time reigning America East Pitcher of the Week and leads the conference with 32 strikeouts in 25 innings. Gallagher, the 2017 America East Pitcher of the Year, has 24 strikeouts in 21.1 innings.Â
The Bearcats have won six America East regular season titles in the last 12 years, including two in the last three years.
Maine has played seven games against top-10 programs (No. 6 Florida State and No. 7 Mississippi State) and its strength of schedule has been rated second-hardest in the country, thus the team's low win percentage so far this spring.
The Black Bears went 20-34 overall last season and tied for fourth in the America East (12-12). In the conference tournament, which Maine hosted, the Black Bears won two games before being eliminated by Stony Brook. Reigning first team all-conference selection Danny Casals returns, as does second team outfielder Hernen Sardinas. The 2019 team includes 13 freshmen.
Expected to get the starting nod for the Black Bears on Sunday are senior righty Nick Silva (0-3, 8.22 ERA) and junior righty Cody Laweryson (0-1, 4.00 ERA). Â
Maine leads the all-time series, 36-33. The Black Bears took two of three last season in Orono.Â
