Baseball heads to VMI for weekend series

Bearcats travel to Lexington, Va. for three games beginning with Friday afternoon tilt

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball returns to the road for another weekend series when the Bearcats (1-6) travel to Lexington, Va. to face Southern Conference member VMI (3-9) in a three-game set. The teams are scheduled to play single games Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Gray Minor Stadium. But after having series' shortened by inclement weather in each of the last two weekends, BU might face another patch of poor weather this weekend.

Binghamton split a pair of games at Marshall last weekend. The Bearcats won the opener 3-1 to notch their first victory of the spring. The host Thundering Herd then prevailed 4-3 in an epic 15-inning affair on Saturday. The length of that game (longest in BU history) wiped out the scheduled second game of the doubleheader and then cold temperatures prohibited the teams from playing on Sunday.

Senior designated hitter Sean Trenholm leads BU with a .500 average and three RBI. Senior first basman Matt Tsukroff is hitting .375. The pitching staff owns a 6.00 ERA. Senior Nick Gallagher is coming off an eight-strikeout, no-decision against Marshall. He allowed just one run in 5.0 innings. Junior Game 2 starter Ben Anderson fanned nine in his 5.0 innings on March 2 at Marshall. He allowed only three hits before exiting with a no decision. Junior Jake Miller is slated to make his first start of the season in Sunday's series finale.

VMI has had its last two games canceled but split a pair with Northern Kentucky last Saturday at home. The Keydets have dropped eight of nine after starting the season 2-1. They are hitting .217 as a team and have a 5.83 pitching ERA. Freshman Game 2 starter Adam Jewell (2.45 ERA) has 19 strikeouts in 14.2 innings. Senior first baseman Jake Huggins is hitting .327 with team-highs of three home runs and 15 RBI in 12 games. VMI returns just two position starters and seven pitchers from a 26-27 team of a year ago.

VMI holds a 14-9 edge in the all-time series. The last time the teams met was in 2016, when the Keydets took two of three games in Lexington.
