VESTAL, N.Y. - For the third time in 11 years but first since 2010, Binghamton will host the America East Championship. The six-team, double-elimination tournament will be played at the Bearcats Baseball Complex and will culminate with the conference champion gaining the league's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
Priot to the game action, the postseason banquet will be held Tuesday night in the Events Center, when the all-conference awards will be given out.Â
The Bearcats have earned the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Hartford in the tournament's second game - Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Fourth-seeded UMass Lowell will meet fifth-seeded Maine in the opening game at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The tournament consists of three games each day until the title game(s) on Saturday. Sunday is used as a rain date. The games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday all start at 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Head coach
Tim Sinicki, six-time America East Coach of the Year, is wrapping up his 27th season at the helm of the Bearcats. Sinicki went over the 600-win plateau this season and ranks 12th in the nation for longest current coaching stints at the same school.
Regular season champion Stony Brook is the top seed and Albany is the No. 2 seed, giving the SUNY schools a sweep of the top three regular season positions. Hartford is the defending tournament champion. Stony Brook won its first regular season crown since 2015. Only two teams outside of Binghamton (6 titles) and Stony Brook (5), Hartford and Maine, have won a regular season crown in the last 13 years. Â
This year's tournament will be the fourth tournament featuring a six-team format. Prior to that it was a four-team event.Â
Binghamton has won the tournament four times, in 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2016.Â
Either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed has won the tournament eight times in the last 10 years, with the No. 3 team winning the other two times. In the three years of the six-team format, the No. 1 seed has won twice (including BU in 2016) and the No. 2 seed the other year. The last time BU was the No. 3 seed (2014), the Bearcats won four straight elimination games to storm back from the consolation bracket and win the title.Â
