VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton University Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Jerry Cummiskey as its new head swimming & diving coach. He arrives from Bryant University, where he was the Associate Head Coach the previous six years.
During Cummiskey's tenure at Bryant (2013-19), the Bulldogs rose to the top of the Northeast Conference (NEC) on both the men's and women's sides. The women's squad won the 2018 and 2019 NEC titles while the men's team was the runner up this past season. Individually, Bryant has produced multiple individual NEC champions, Senior National qualifiers, NCAA qualifiers and 2016 Rio Olympian Ben Schulte in the 100 breaststroke during that stretch.
Cummiskey oversaw all aspects of the Bulldog program during his tenure, including academics, recruiting and both pool and dry land workouts. In the classroom, the Bulldog women's team had an overall GPA of 3.41 during the 2018-19 academic year while the men attained a 3.29 team GPA.
"We are very excited to have Jerry head up our swimming & diving program," Binghamton Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. "He played a significant role in the growth of Bryant's program and he will do a good job of building on our recent success here at Binghamton."
"I am very excited to be the next head coach at Binghamton University," Cumminskey said. "I am grateful for this opportunity. With the great people on campus, the athletic facilities, the beautiful campus and the great academic reputation of Binghamton, I believe we will be able to continue to build on the past success of the program and compete at the top of the America East Conference. I look forward to getting on campus, meeting our talented student-athletes and getting to work on this season and beyond."
For the past three years, Cummiskey has also been the head coach for the Bulldog Aquatic Club, where he worked with swimmers ages 9-18. He took his club teams to various New England and USA Swimming Championship Meets ranging from the New England Senior Championships to USA Junior Nationals.
A 2011 graduate of Springfield (Mass.) College, Cummiskey earned his bachelor's degree in movement and sports studies. He has also earned various YMCA and USA Swimming Certifications and in 2017, was the Jean Freeman Scholarship Recipient at the CSCAA National Convention.
