Men defeat host NJIT 176.50-123.50, Women Edged 156-144 by CCSU

NEWARK, N.J. – Sophomore Evan Peters, senior Maria Pignatelli and freshman Julia Iwanow each won a pair of individual events, highlighting Binghamton's performance in a swimming & diving tri meet at NJIT on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcat men defeated the host Highlanders 176.50-123.50 while the women lost a close 156-144 decision to Central Connecticut State University (CCSU).

"Both teams swam well today," head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. "Our men got several close wins early that set the tone for the day while the women's lead went back and fourth during the meet and came down to the final relay. We had good performances on both sides."

Peters swept the men's 200 free (1:38.85) and 500 free (4:31.55) and was also part of the first-place 400 medley relay team (3:20.99). Also on that winning relay were freshman Isaih Francis, sophomore Tyler Schultz and senior Patrick Lang.

Pignatelli captured the women's 100 back (58.11) and 100 free (53.17) while Iwanow took top honors in the 100 breast (1:05.84) and 200 breast (2:22.99) and also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team (1:48.44). Other members of that first-place relay included sophomore Eva Smith as well as juniors Haley Nowak and Ava Olsian.

Junior men's diver Dylan Norby, meanwhile, met the NCAA Zone Standard in the three-meter event for the second time this season. His first-place score of 324.90 against NJIT met the three-meter standard of 320.00. Earlier in the season, Norby posted a qualifying score of 345.35 against Le Moyne back on Sept. 28.

Other individual winners on the men's since included Francis in the 100 back (50.18), Schultz in the 100 breast (56.51), sophomore Ryaan Alshami in the 50 free (21.23), senior Liam Preston in the 100 free (45.90) and sophomore Jacob Koclanis in the one-meter diving competition (277.20).

In addition, Alshami, Francis and Preston joined senior Max Kaback to win the men's 200 free relay (1:24.02).

Also winning individual events on the women's side were senior Elizabeth Tirado in the three-meter diving event (260.85) and Nowak in the 100 fly (58.62).

Binghamton concludes the fall portion of its schedule with the Cleveland State/Magnus Cup Meet from Nov. 20-22.
