Men's basketball hosts Stony Brook on Wednesday

Bearcats looking for season sweep of SUNY rivals; big crowd expected for 7 p.m. tip

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's basketball takes aim at a rare achievement when the Bearcats (8-15, 2-8 America East) host SUNY rival Stony Brook (16-7, 7-3 AE) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Events Center. With a victory, BU would complete its first season sweep of the Seawolves in 11 years. 

Binghamton has beaten Stony Brook in back-to-back games - both played on Long Island. The first was a playoff game last March and the second win occurred three weeks ago. The Seawolves are currently in second place in the America East standings.

Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms (17.6 ppg.) is seven points away from becoming just the seventh player in 41-year history of the America East to reach the 1,000-point scoring mark as a sophomore. He currently has 993 career points. Sessoms also leads the America East in assists (4.7/game).   

The game is a Weis Markets "Weis Markets Pack-the-House" night and a large crowd is expected. Fans can stop by any of the local area Weis Markets and pick up free ticket coupons for the game and also receive a special in-store discount off of groceries, compliments of Weis Markets. The first 1,000 Weis Market "Pack The House" fans will receive a $5 Dunkin Card compliments of Dunkin. Ticket coupons can be redeemed at the Events Center Ticket Office from noon – 4:30 pm or starting two hours prior to the 7 p.m. start time on game day.

• On Wednesday visiting Maine used an 18-0 early second-half run to take control and a late BU rally fell short 82-75
• Senior guard Richard Caldwell, Jr. scored a career-high 20 pts. (13 in 2nd half)
• Freshman forward George Tinsley posted his team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds
• Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms chipped in 13 points to move closer to the 1,000-point mark (993 pts.). He also notched his third double-double of the season with a career-high 10 assists and was three rebounds shy of a triple-double

• Coming off a surprising 81-64 loss at UNH on Saturday (after beating them by 25 in first meeting of season)
• Missed first 15 shots, didn't score for game's first 8+ minutes, fell behind 30-8, eventually climbed to within nine but rally stalled in game's closing minutes
• Leading scorer and rebounder Elijah Olaniyi was injured early in the second half an didn't return
• Rank No. 2 in AE in offense (71.6 ppg.) and third in defense (66.7 ppg.)
• Only AE team to beat Vermont but now two games behind in standings
• Only AE losses have been to Hartford, UNH and Binghamton
• Team is 8-2 at home but only 6-7 on road this season  

All-time series vs. Stony Brook
• Stony Brook leads the series, which began in 1963, 43-30
• Stony Brook has won 19 of the last 23 head-to-head, but the Bearcats have won two straight — a stunning 78-72 road upset in the America East tournament quarterfinals last March and then an 83-79 road win in the first head-to-head matchup of the season three weeks ago  
• On Jan. 22 on Long Island, sophomore guard Sam Sessoms keyed a 10-2 closing run with nine straight points to lift Binghamton to the win. Sessoms led four Bearcats in double figures. After Binghamton led the entire first half, the teams traded blows throughout a second half that featured 10 lead change. The decisive 9-0 Sessoms run spanned 1:19. Sessoms wound up with a game-high 25 points (17 in second half) and senior forward Pierre Sarr notched his fourth double-double of the season with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five assists.

Bearcats one of youngest teams in nation
Binghamton now is ranked No. 325 in experience (15th youngest team in nation) by KenPom. The team's most common starting lineup shows two freshmen (Mills, Tinsley), a sophomore (Sessoms) and two seniors (Sarr and Caldwell).

Sessoms closing in on 1,000 career points  
Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms now has 993 career points and can reach the 1K mark with seven points — still less than halfway through his collegiate career. He is bidding to become just the seventh player in the league's 41-year history to reach the 1K mark as a sophomore. Sessoms currently ranks fiifth in Div. I era scoring at Binghamton and his career average (17.7 ppg.) puts him in pace to become the program's all-time scoring leader (1,705 pts.) by the end of his junior season. Sessoms is also on pace to surpass the 2,000-point mark by the time he graduates, which would make him a 2K scorer in both high school and college.

Binghamton is receiving 75% of its offense from underclassmen and its top three scorers are all first or second-year guys.

70 is magic number on offense  
The Bearcats can eye the number 70 on the scoreboard. When BU puts 70 on the board they are 8-2. When the Bearcats score less than 70, they are 0-13.

Sarr selected to Midseason Watch List for Dos Equis 3x3U event
Senior forward Pierre Sarr has been selected as one of 10 seniors from the America East on the Dos Equis 3x3U National Championship Midseason Watch List. The event pits seniors representing all 32 NCAA Division I conferences in a FIBA-sanctioned 3-on-3 event that carries a grand prize of $150,000. This year's event will take place April 3-5 in Atlanta. Last year a squad from the mid-major Colonial Athletic Association won the event.  

Caldwell now plays key role in lineup  
After coming off the bench for much of the season, senior guard Richard Caldwell, Jr. has started the last seven games. In his last eight outings, he is averaging 10.0 points in 31+ minutes of action. He has hit double-figures in four of those games, including three of the last five. In Saturday's game against Maine, Caldwell scored a career-high 20 points.  
 
Bearcats riding 3-point scoring, rank fifth in country in long distance reliance  
BU ranks 17th in the country in 3-pointers per game (9.8) and 26th in made 3-pointers (225). They have canned 10 or more 3s 11 times this season, including a season-best 15 in the most recent game against Maine. The Bearcats rank No. 5 in the country in 3-point reliance (Ken Pom), with 42% of their offense coming via the 3-ball.

Bearacts among the America East, NCAA stat leaders  
Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms leads the America East in assists (4.7/game) and fourth in scoring (17.6). He also ranks third in minutes (34.9) and fifth in steals (1.6). Freshman forward George Tinsley ranks fourth in the nation in minutes (38:18/game). Tinsley is third in the America East in rebounding (7.9), sixth in blocks (1.1/game) and is the top-scoring freshman in the conference (11.7 ppg.). Senior forward Pierre Sarr is fourth in the AE in rebounding (7.3). Freshman guard Brenton Mills is fifth in the AE in 3-point percentage (36%) and sixth in 3-pointers per game (2.1).      

Tinsley ranks fourth in nation in minutes played  
Freshman forward George Tinsley led the nation in minutes for the first two months of the season and currently ranks fourth (38:18). Tinsley has played a full game nine times this season, including all 45 minutes in the overtime win over Boston University on Dec. 7.  

Bearcats boast four different players with double-doubles, six players with 20 or more points in a game  
Binghamton has four different players produce a double-double this season. Freshman forward George Tinsley has five, senior forward Pierre Sarr has four, sophomore guard Sam Sessoms has three and senior guard Richard Caldwell, Jr. has one. Sessoms has two double-doubles with points and rebounds and another with points and assists. The Bearcats also have six different players who have scored 20 or more points in a game this season (Sessoms 10x, Mills 3x, Tinsley 3x, Sarr 2x, Petcash, Caldwell).
