BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore
Casey Gribben and junior
Mallory Prelewicz repeated as pole vault champions and the women's distance medley relay (DMR) team pulled out a victory, highlighting Binghamton's showing in Day One of the America East Indoor Track & Field Championships, which are being held at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
With one day left in the meet, the Bearcat men are second in the team standings while the women are in third place. All nine conference schools are competing in the America East Championships.
Gribben recorded a first-place height of 14-11. He won a jump off with William Green of Maine. Gribben is the first Binghamton men's pole vaulter to repeat as the America East Indoor champion since Rory Quiller won in 2007 and 2008.
Prelewicz, meanwhile, had a winning jump of 11-11 3/4. It marked her third career America East title, having also won the 2019 outdoor championship. Prelewicz is the first Binghamton women's pole vaulter ever to repeat as the America East Indoor champion.
The women's first-place DMR quartet included seniors
Jessica Cueva-Scarpelli,
Latoya Shand and
Emily Mackay as well as junior Carmella Culhane. Their time was 11:47.61.
This marks the second career conference relay title for Cueva-Scarpelli, Culhane and Mackay. Last spring, they were part of the winning 4x800 relay at the America East Outdoor Championships along with current sophomore
Aziza Chigatayeva.
The Bearcat men's DMR team of senior
Mitch Halpern, redshirt junior
Dan Schaffer and sophomores
Maximo Olavarria and
Dan Gahagan took third place with a time of 9:56.69. Schaffer anchored the event with a race-best 4:03 mile.
Binghamton's other top-three finisher on Friday was sophomore
Jake Restivo, who was third in the men's long jump.
The America East Indoor Track & Field Championships conclude on Saturday.
