Volkmann scores career high six goals, Murphy adds four in loss

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Binghamton University women's lacrosse team dropped a road matchup to Albany by a score of 19-13 Saturday afternoon at John Fallon Field. The Bearcats (1-1) fell behind early in the first half and made a push for a comeback, but were unable to catch up to the Great Danes (5-2 overall, 2-0 AE).

"I'm pleased with the intensity and effort we showed on the field today," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "While it's not the result we wanted, we saw some promising play being only our second game of the season. Each game gives us a better idea of who we are and what tweaks we can make to be the best version of ourselves come the next game. We look forward to seeing them again in May."

Paige Volkmann led the way for the Bearcats, scoring a career high six goals and adding an assist. Meanwhile, freshman Madison Murphy tallied four goals and an assist, continuing a hot start to her career.

In the first half, Volkmann got BU on the board after two goals by Albany to halt their momentum. The Great Danes went on to score four unanswered goals to lead 6-1, but Binghamton answered with four of the game's next five finishes to trim the deficit to 7-5.

Murphy and Volkmann scored again in a back-and-forth period late in the half, but Albany would finish on a run to lead 12-7 at the break.

In the second half, the Great Danes opened the scoring with two goals to take a seven goal advantage. Volkmann and Murphy led the offense in a comeback effort, but a Great Dane run stretched the lead to 18-11. When it was all said and done, Albany came away with the home victory, 19-13 despite goals by Rebecca Korn and Jamie Golderman late in the contest.

For Binghamton, Alyssa Sanchez was strong on both sides of the ball, adding a goal and an assist while picking up three ground balls and contributing six draw controls.

The Bearcats return home next Saturday afternoon to host Vermont. The contest begins at 4 p.m. in Vestal.
