VESTAL, N.Y. - It was Senior Day at the Patricia Saunders Aquatic Center on Sunday but it was the freshmen who led the way in the swimming & diving teams' sweep.
Courtney Moane won three events in the women's 171-129 win over Stony Brook while both
Liam Murphy and
Travis Phillips each won twice in the men's 196-103 win over NJIT. With the victories, both Bearcat teams are at 3-0 this season.Â
Moane captured the 100 breast (1:06.17), 200 breast (2:24.34) and the 200 IM (2:12.97). She also was part of the first-place 400 medley relay, which also included fellow freshman
Kandice Chandra and
Molly Greeley as well as sophomore
Manuela Matkovic and clocked a time of 3:57.81.
Murphy took top honors in the 1000 free (9:50.91) and the 500 free (4:46.95). Phillips, meanwhile, was first in the 100 free (47.73) and the 50 free (21.81).
Other freshman winners included
Mel Carousso in the women's 1000 free (10:34.88) and
Henry Shemet in the men's 200 IM (1:57.69). In addition,
George Kipshidze was first in the 100 back (54.24).Â
As for the seniors,
Sophia Howard and
David Walters swept the diving events. Howard won the women's one-meter event (246.00) and the three-meter competition (258.30). Walters won the men's one-meter event with a score of 262.12 and the three-meter competition with 254.09 points.Â
Binghamton's other two double winners of the day were sophomores Xiaoyu Lin and Matkovic. Lin won the men's 100 breast (58.71) and the 200 breast (2:07.24). Matkovic was first in the women's 50 free (25.16) and the 100 free (54.13).Â
The men's team also won the 400 free relay. The team consisted of Murphy, Phillips, sophomore
Justin Meyn and junior Ben Beldner and recorded a time of 3:13.58.
"I'm super pleased with our effort and competitiveness today," said head coach
Jerry Cummiskey. "We had guys step up, compete, and grind out places today. We are in a great place as we keep getting a little better every day. It was great to honor our seniors today with wins against conference opponents. I'm very proud of how our team continues to be resilient through all the challenges this year has presented."
Both teams head to Colgate next Saturday for their next dual meet.Â
