Men’s basketball takes down Maine 73-65

Falko nets 22 points, McGriff adds 18 in road AE victory

BANGOR, ME. - Binghamton men's basketball made several key plays down the stretch to take down Maine 73-65 in a road America East contest Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats (6-7 overall, 3-1 AE) held a lead for a majority of the game, but fell behind with less than ten minutes remaining before surging to the win.

BU dominated the boards, grabbing 42 to Maine's 28, while Jacob Falko led the team in scoring with 22 points. John McGriff powered Binghamton in the opening half, pouring in 15 of his 18 total points. Christian Hinckson had nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

"I'm proud of how we battled today," head coach Levell Sanders said. "We knew Maine would fight hard in the second half, but we did a good job of working in the final minutes and making the extra pass offensively. We'll enjoy the win on this trip back, and we'll be ready for Stony Brook Wednesday."

Up five at the break, Falko led a second-half effort with 16 of his 22 points. Maine (3-11, 0-3) rallied to take a 51-50 lead, and led by as many as three before a Tyler Bertram deep ball and five straight for Falko helped regain the advantage. The BU defense held Maine to just three points in the final 5:24, while the offense scored 14 in that time to cement the victory.

McGriff led a sharp offensive first half as Binghamton shot 53% from the field. The Bearcats opened a 9-4 edge early, and carried that lead throughout the opening 20 minutes. A Hinckson three-point play made it a 29-20 advantage, which proved to be the largest of the game.

Binghamton returns to the Events Center to host Stony Brook Wednesday. Tip-off with the SeaWolves (9-6 overall, 1-1 AE) is at 7 p.m.
