BRONX, N.Y. – Graduate student
Sophia Ryan placed 16th overall in the women's race and earned All-Region honors, highlighting Binghamton's performance in the NCAA Northeast Region Cross Country Championships on Friday at Van Cortlandt Park. The Bearcat women placed a program-best 11th out of 37 teams while the men were 16th out of 33 teams.
Ryan covered the women's 6,000-meter course in a time of 21:02. By placing among the top 25 runners, she becomes the third Binghamton female ever to earn All-Northeast Region honors. Katie Radzik was selected in 2005 and 2006 as was Emily Mackay, who placed a program-best third last year.
Freshman
Sydney Leitner was 41st overall, clocking a time of 21:27. Right behind her was graduate student
Aziza Chigatayeva, who was 43rd (21:28).
Leitner's performance is the second-best by a Binghamton freshman at the Northeast Regional Championships. Radzik was 23rd in 2005.
Maia Ramsden of Harvard won the women's individual crown with a time of 20:20. Providence won the team championship with 71 points.
There were 252 finishers in the women's race.
On the men's side, junior
Josh Stone was Binghamton's top finisher, placing 52nd overall in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 30:46. Senior
Matthew Cavaliere was 59th (30:55) and fellow senior
Ryan Guerci was 92nd (31"31).
Graham Blanks of Harvard won the men's individual title with a time of 29:14. The team title went to Syracuse, with 65 points.
There were 227 finishers in the men's race.
NOTE: The previous-best finish by the Binghamton women's team at the NCAA Northeast Region Meet was 16th (out of 36 teams) last year.
