Bearcats post four first-place finishes and one school record

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Binghamton track & field teams opened the 2022-23 season at the Cornell/Greg Page Relays on Saturday with four first-place performances as well as a school record. There was no team scoring kept at the meet.

On the men's side, senior Marcrene Jeannot was first in the triple jump (47-10) and fellow senior Cian Galligan won the 3,000 (8:41.28). The Bearcat women's winners included sophomore Jenna Chan in the 60 hurdles (8.62) and fellow sophomore Hillary Abankwa in the 300 (40.20). Abankwa's time ranks second all-time in Binghamton program history.

Sophomore Brian Luciano was second in the men's weight throw with a school-record distance of 59-10 ½. That eclipsed the 2014 mark of 59-1 ¼ set by Jacob Platel.

Other second-place performances on the men's side were turned in by senior Mark Scanlon in the mile (4:29.39) and junior Marcus Johnson in the 500 (1:06.31).

Runner-up finishes on the women's side were recorded by sophomore Lucciana Robertson in the high jump (5-6) and graduate student Stephanie Cassens in the 500 (1:16.83). Robertson's mark was a personal-best performance and ties the sixth-best mark in program history.

Also on Saturday, graduate student Aziza Chigatayeva took part in the 5,000 at the Boston University Season Opener. Her time of 16:22 was a personal-best effort by over a minute (17:40 was her previous-best time) and ranks second all-time in Binghamton program history. Chigatayeva placed 59th overall in a meet that featured many professional and unattached runners.

The Cornell Greg Page Relays is the Bearcats' only meet this fall semester. The Bearcats will return to Cornell for the Upstate Challenge on Jan. 21
