Bearcat alum earns bronze medal in women’s 1,500 at USATF Outdoor Meet

EUGENE, Ore. – Emily Mackay is returning to the world stage.

Just one year after qualifying for the Paris Olympics, the 2021 Binghamton alum earned the bronze medal in the women's 1,500 finals at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships on Saturday afternoon at Hayward Field. As a result, she punched her ticket to the World Outdoor Championships, which will be held in Tokyo, Japan Sept. 13-21.

Mackay was third overall with a time of 4:04.38. Nikki Hiltz - Mackay's Olympic teammate last year - won the race (4:03.15) followed by Sinclaire Johnson in second place (4:03.77). The top three individual finishers in each event advanced to the World Championships.

"I'm super excited," Mackay said during her post-race interview on NBC Sports, "I overcame a lot of challenges to get here and I'm very proud of how I handled them. I stayed true to myself through everything and feel that I'm in a great place heading into this next month."

This marks the first time in her career that Mackay has advanced to the World Outdoor Championships. She took part in the 2024 World Indoor Meet in Glasgow, Scotland and earned the bronze medal in the women's 1,500.

Mackay advanced to the semifinals of the women's 1,500 at the Paris Olympics.

A five-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American during her years at Binghamton, Mackay capped her career with a sixth-place finish in the women's 1,500 at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. That meet was also held at Hayward Field.

Also on Saturday at the USATF Outdoor Championships, 2018 Binghamton alum Eric Holt was 12th in the men's 1,500 finals with a time of 3:40.29. Holt joined Mackay at the 2024 USATF Olympic Trials and advanced to the semifinal round of the men's 1,500.

In addition, recent graduate Marcus Johnson was fifth in his semifinal heat and 19th overall in the men's 400 hurdles (53.30).
