BOSTON, Mass. – Graduate student
Emily Mackay continued her stellar indoor track & field season, clocking a NCAA-best mile time of 4:30.94 at the Boston/Valentine's Meet on Friday evening at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center. The two-day meet, which concludes on Saturday, does not include team scoring.
In an event that featured 207 runners in 15 heats, Mackay was in the fastest heat and placed sixth overall. She was the top collegiate runner in the field.
In the process, Mackay shaved two seconds off her school-record time of 4:32.55, which she turned in at the Penn State National Open on Jan. 21. That mark stood as the top performance at the NCAA Division I level this indoor season heading into the meet at Boston.
Of the five unattached runners that finished ahead of Mackay, the top time of 4:24.42 was turned in by Lucia Stafford of the Nike Bowerman TC.
"Emily handled the race very well," Binghamton distance coach
Annette Acuff said. "The pace went out very fast, so I was very impressed with how she handled herself.
Another school record that fell on Friday was the women's 4x400 relay. The quartet of graduate students
Brittany Korsah and
Nia Joyner, senior
Stephanie Cassens and freshman
Hillary Abankwa clocked a time of 3:44.26 to finish third overall in a field of 45 teams.
The previous Binghamton 4x400 relay record of 3:44.26 was set by Erika Kisel, Kathleen Klein, Emily Taussig and Jessica Hennig in 2013.
Joyner also finished ninth out of 225 runners in the 200 (24.77) while Korsah was ninth out of 194 entrees in the 400 (55.89).
Freshman
Jenna Chan, meanwhile, continued her impressive rookie season by placing third overall in the 60 hurdles. Her time of 8.69 broke her own Binghamton freshman record (8.74) and is the second-fastest time in program history.
Elly Scherer set the current mark of 8.65 in 2019.
