Women’s lacrosse travels to No. 3 Syracuse Sunday

Bearcats to kick off 2022 season at Carrier Dome

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse begins the 2022 season against the reigning NCAA runner-ups Sunday. It will be the fifth time BU has played the Orange in the last seven seasons, and it will be the third time in those seven seasons that the Bearcats start the season at the Carrier Dome.

Notes

  • Binghamton returns five of its top six leading scorers from a season ago, including America East All-Rookie selection Madison Murphy. She tallied 17 goals and five assists on the season, including a six-goal performance against Albany.

  • Rebecca Korn (10 goals) and Emily Masera (eight goals) were also strong contributors a season ago. Hayley Weltner added eight goals of her own in just five games played.

  • Defensively, Binghamton graduated two starters, but return a deep and talented bunch. Paige Alletzhauser, Gabrielle Marshall, Kelly Quinn and Cassidy Evans will spearhead an experienced group.

  • On the draw, the Bearcats will look to use Sofia Afkham and Jamie Golderman, with Weltner and Jesse Barer also garnering looks. Afkham was second on the team with 22 draw controls in 2021.

Scouting the Orange

  • Syracuse is coming off a 12-9 win over No. 12 Stanford in its season opener. They outscored the Cardinal 6-3 in the second half en route to the victory.

  • Meaghan Tyrrell had six goals for SU, including the go-ahead finish in the beginning of the third quarter. Defensively, Katie Goodale had four caused turnovers to lead the team.

  • Tyrrell led Syracuse with 68 goals in 2021, including two seven-goal outputs. Megan Carney also tallied 69 points for the Orange last season, and she had a goal and an assist Friday.

  • In goal, SU had two goalies play in Friday's action. Delaney Sweitzer got the starting nod while Kimber Hower finished the contest.

  • Syracuse leads the all-time series 8-0.

  • Binghamton will continue road play at Colgate Wednesday. Opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
